Upright meaning
One figure on the height, six staves rising below: the Seven of Wands is defending a position you earned. Expect your idea, your boundary, or your territory to be challenged, not because it is wrong but because it is visible. You hold the vantage, which counts for more than numbers. State your case plainly, keep your feet, and remember that valour here includes verbal arenas, negotiations, wordy strife, where firmness matters more than volume. Not every attack deserves a parry; some just need you standing. Protect the ground worth protecting.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the height feels precarious. Demands multiply until one defender faces ten, and overwhelm or exhaustion makes every stance feel shaky. The card asks two questions: is the hill still worth holding, and are you fighting alone out of habit rather than necessity? Some positions should be yielded gracefully; retreat is a tactic, not a character flaw. Where the ground matters, recruit, delegate, and fortify before the next wave. Waite adds a caution against indecision, since wavering at the edge is more dangerous than standing or stepping down. Choose your hill on purpose, then hold it or leave it deliberately.
Classical excerpt — The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), Part III §2
Divinatory Meanings: It is a card of valour, for, on the surface, six are attacking one, who has, however, the vantage position. On the intellectual plane, it signifies discussion, wordy strife; in business—negotiations, war of trade, barter, competition. It is further a card of success, for the combatant is on the top and his enemies may be unable to reach him. Reversed: Perplexity, embarrassments, anxiety. It is also a caution against indecision.
