Upright meaning

Garlands hang between the staves: the Four of Wands is the harvest home, the party at the gate of the thing you built. It marks a milestone worth marking, a foundation laid, a homecoming, a threshold crossed with people who are glad you crossed it. Accept the celebration rather than rushing to the next task; joy not paused for files itself as noise. This card favors gatherings, anniversaries, and the quiet recognition that a chapter of effort has held. Stand inside the garland a while. It was raised for you.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the garland sways. Waite notes the meaning stays bright, only muted: prosperity and increase continue in a smaller key. A celebration may be postponed, a home mid-renovation, a milestone reached but not yet felt. The instability, when present, is usually in the frame: routines unsettled, a household between shapes, belonging under repair. Tend foundations before hanging decorations. Name what still stands and let it count; gratitude spoken to one person can do the work of a postponed feast. Finish the walls, then raise the garlands.

Classical excerpt — The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), Part III §2
Divinatory Meanings: They are for once almost on the surface—country life, haven of refuge, a species of domestic harvest-home, repose, concord, harmony, prosperity, peace, and the perfected work of these. Reversed: The meaning remains unaltered; it is prosperity, increase, felicity, beauty, embellishment.
