Upright meaning

Ships sail on your behalf. The Three of Wands appears when foundations are laid and the first returns are traveling toward you, slowly, over open water. Your part now is the far view: watching the horizon, refining the plan, spotting the next opening while the current one matures. This is also a card of able cooperation; the best version of this picture includes other people's ships beside yours. Think in seasons rather than days. What you set in motion deserves steady tending and patience with distance. The horizon is not empty.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the ships are late. Growth stalls, plans meet headwinds, or a venture returns lighter than promised. The card first asks whether the delays are weather or navigation: some obstacles simply take time, others flag a route worth revising. It also names a particular loneliness, insisting on doing everything yourself while the horizon stays stubbornly wide. Admitting where help would change the math is strategy, not weakness. If adversity has merely paused, use the becalmed stretch for maintenance. Returns delayed are not returns denied. Keep the lookout posted.

Classical excerpt — The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), Part III §2
Divinatory Meanings: He symbolizes established strength, enterprise, effort, trade, commerce, discovery; those are his ships, bearing his merchandise, which are sailing over the sea. The card also signifies able co-operation in business, as if the successful merchant prince were looking from his side towards yours with a view to help you. Reversed: The end of troubles, suspension or cessation of adversity, toil and disappointment.
