Upright meaning

The King of Wands holds a flowering staff: authority that grows things rather than merely ruling them. This card favors taking visible charge of a venture, setting direction others can believe in, and leading with both warmth and unbending honesty. Waite insists on the integrity, this king's word is load-bearing, and hints at good news arriving through opportunity or alliance. Bring ideas and people into the same field and let the combination work. Vision here is practical: seeing the harvest in the field everyone else calls a meadow. Lead as you would want to be led, and the country follows.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the king's warmth ices over. Vision hardens into dogma, leadership into steamrolling, and severity replaces persuasion, the tune of a man certain he is the smartest fire in the room. Ask where you have stopped listening in order to keep commanding, or where someone else's authority has been crushing rather than clarifying. The card can also warn of an honest-seeming figure whose sternness serves ego, or news of an inheritance-adjacent matter needing unusual care. Soften the grip without abandoning the standard. Lead by keeping people warm; fire that only judges burns nothing worth burning.

Divinatory Meanings: Dark man, friendly, countryman, generally married, honest and conscientious. The card always signifies honesty, and may mean news concerning an unexpected heritage to fall in before very long. Reversed: Good, but severe; austere, yet tolerant.
