Upright meaning

A young man sits under a tree, unimpressed by the cup offered him. The Four of Cups is the gray weather of the heart: not crisis, just flatness, pleasure that has lost its taste, an enviable life experienced from under a blanket. Notice what is held out while you stare at the grass; the offer is often quieter than the boredom. This card permits the rest, sitting with dissatisfaction is how values get recalibrated, but set a deadline for the funk. Ask what would interest you, not what should. The new cup arrives only for those willing to look up.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the eyes lift. Something breaks the spell: an invitation accepted, a spark of curiosity, appetite returning in small honest portions. This is the card of leaving the gray afternoon, answering the message, trying the class, letting the offered cup be taken seriously. Watch the pendulum's other extreme, seizing every new thing out of fear of the old blankness. Gratitude is the stabilizer here, not as a chore but as eyesight, counting what the tree already holds. Say yes to one real thing this week. The rest of the color returns on its own.

Classical excerpt — The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), Part III §2
Divinatory Meanings: Weariness, disgust, aversion, imaginary vexations, as if the wine of this world had caused satiety only; another wine, as if a fairy gift, is now offered the wastrel, but he sees no consolation therein. This is also a card of blended pleasure. Reversed: Novelty, presage, new instruction, new relations.
