Upright meaning

A dreamy queen gazes into an ornate cup. The Queen of Cups is mastery of the heart's deep water: compassion with skill, intuition you can set a course by, the friend whose attention alone settles a room. This card favors caring work done well, holding space without losing yourself, trusting the reads you get off people and situations. Waite calls her devoted and loving, and her strength is devotion that sees clearly rather than drowning. Let yourself feel for others and stay buoyant; the two are not opposites. Empathy needs a lid to remain a gift.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the water gets into the boat. Empathy without banks floods: absorbing everyone's weather, caretaking that quietly requires keeping, moods that arrive before their reasons. This position names the porous boundary, the yes said to avoid guilt, the help that harms the helper. There is also a shadow reading, feeling concealed rather than felt, a surface calm over undisclosed currents, yours or someone else's. The repair is containment, not closure: whose emotion is this, actually, is the daily question. Walk beside the river rather than in it. You can love people dry-shod.
