Upright meaning

A satisfied host sits before his nine cups, the wish card's pose. The Nine of Cups is contentment in the material register: comfort earned and enjoyed, a wish settling into place, the pleasure of getting what you asked for. Receive it without apology; the feast is legitimately yours. The card's sharp edge is the difference between satisfaction and smugness, enjoying the table and needing it envied. Waite's hints at imperfection suggest an audit: does this wish still fit the person who has since grown? Enjoy the fullness, share the surplus, and let contentment be a base camp, not a summit.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the wish arrives slightly wrong or the fullness feels hollow. The pleasure is real at the surface and short beneath it, the achievement lands without the imagined warmth, or the wish, granted literally, misses its actual point. This position is not punishment; it is calibration. Ask what the wish was standing in for, the connection, the rest, the feeling of being enough, and pursue that directly. There can also be overdoing here, comfort consumed past comfort. Truth is the card's medicine: one honest look at what satisfies and what merely quiets. Feed the real appetite the actual thing.
