A figure turns from eight neatly stacked cups and walks toward the mountains. The Eight of Cups is leaving what is merely adequate: the life that works and does not feed, the relationship at maintenance level, the success that stopped meaning. This is not failure or flight; it is the expensive honesty of wanting depth over arrangement. Before you go, check whether meaning could be retrieved where you stand; some departures are wise, some are weather. If the answer is still go, then go properly, with gratitude for what the cups held and both eyes on the pass.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the walker hesitates at the edge of the frame. The leaving is deferred, either by fear wearing the costume of loyalty or by genuine second thoughts worth hearing. Distinguish them slowly: fear argues in circles, wisdom in specifics. This position can also mark the wandering that follows a departure, out of one valley with no map for the next, and asks for a modest interim plan rather than a grand destination. Sometimes the honest move is returning, with new eyes and amended terms. Choose on purpose. The cups you stack next should be ones you can drink from.

In practice, it is usually found that the card shews the decline of a matter, or that a matter which has been thought to be important is really of slight consequence—either for good or evil. Reversed: Great joy, happiness, feasting.
