Upright meaning

A cloaked figure stares at three spilled cups while two stand full behind him. The Five of Cups is grief with its back to the surviving good. Honor the loss honestly, what spilled was real and mourned for good reason, and let the mourning have its weather rather than a schedule. But the card's quiet geometry is the reading: two cups remain, people, capacities, chances, still standing. Waite also notes gains wrapped in disappointment, inheritances short of expectation. When you are ready, and only then, turn at the waist. The bridge over the river is closer than it looks.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the figure begins to turn. Grief loosens its grip, enough to see the two cups still standing and the bridge beyond. This position favors returns: old friends resurfacing, news that reopens a door, the slow walk back toward what was left behind the mourning. Watch for the premature version, declaring yourself fine before the work is done, and for the opposite error, refusing to let the sad thing be sad at all. The real movement is acceptance as action, archiving what spilled with respect, picking up what remains. Bring one standing cup with you. The bridge holds weight now.

Classical excerpt — The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), Part III §2
Divinatory Meanings: It is a card of loss, but something remains over; three have been taken, but two are left; it is a card of inheritance, patrimony, transmission, but not corresponding to expectations; with some interpreters it is a card of marriage, but not without bitterness or frustration. Reversed: News, alliances, affinity, consanguinity, ancestry, return, false projects.
