Upright meaning
A figure lies pierced by ten swords while dawn breaks on the horizon. The Ten of Swords is the ending that cannot be spun: the collapse, the burnout, the bottom of the well. Its strange comfort is finality, the swords are all in; this suit holds no worse hand. What is over is over, and the first honest act is to stop negotiating with that. The second is to notice the horizon, dawn is in the picture on purpose, and let yourself be helped up. Rock bottom is stable ground: flat, visible, buildable. Grieve what needs grieving. Then, slowly, stand.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the swords come out one at a time. Recovery in its slow, unphotogenic middle: the worst confirmed past, strength returning in spoonfuls, life reassembled at a humbler scale. This position can also mark a refusal, the ending not yet accepted, the arrangement propped past all sense; if the door has closed, rehearsing the handle only delays the dawn. Waite's reversal notes advantage and favor, impermanent but real, so take the small windfalls and bank them. Rest more than seems reasonable. Ten swords out is ten swords no longer in you. You have earned the sunrise twice.
