Upright meaning

A king sits in judgment, sword upright. The King of Swords is intellect in authority: reason applied with principle, truth preferred to comfort, decisions explainable in daylight. This card favors expert counsel, ethical review, hard questions asked of yourself first, leadership that runs on standards rather than mood. Waite's list is all of a piece, power, command, law, militant intelligence, and its crown is willingness to be bound by the same rules he issues. Seek this quality in advisors, and practice it in your own rulings. A verdict you can defend to the affected party is the king's mark.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the bench becomes a throne for severity. Judgment curdles: verdicts delivered cold, rules enforced for the pleasure of enforcement, intellect used to dominate rather than to clarify. Ask where principle has stopped serving people and started serving its own reflection. This position can also mark an authority figure whose rigidity or worse is affecting your situation; document, seek second opinions, and do not mistake confidence for correctness. Truth delivered without warmth teaches people to hide from truth. The finest blade was never meant for the messenger. Reason needs a heart to know what the cutting is for.
