Page: Hexagram 50 鼎 — Line 3.
Interpret through classical principles in two layers: 1) Structural Evidence: identify key line dynamics, changing line pivot, or element balance. 2) Actionable Verdict: direct answer to the inquiry in plain language, followed by 2–3 concrete next steps (action-verb first) and mindful cautions. I Ching casting

Line 3 holds solid yang strength at the crest of the lower trigram, possessing rich capability like the pheasant fat within the cauldron, yet altered cauldron ears obstruct movement, leaving it unable to be moved and enjoyed.

The classical reading observes that when the balancing rain falls, yin and yang meet to dissolve past regret, while the transformed hexagram 64 (Wei Ji) confirms that the overall journey remains actively underway rather than broken.

Restraining restless frustration during this holding pattern is the most critical inner discipline. Hold steady through this brief period of misaligned timing, knowing your true value will soon find its proper outlet.

Career

Your strategic proposals and technical competence may be exceptional, but organizational friction or missing sponsorship currently prevents their implementation.

The classical Xiang commentary explains that when the cauldron's ears are altered, the proper means of carrying the vessel are lost, indicating that procedural barriers rather than personal deficiency cause the delay.

Continuing to deliver solid baseline work without forcing premature adoption keeps professional relationships intact. Use this pause to refine your work behind the scenes until administrative channels reopen to receive it.

Love & relationships

Genuine affection exists between partners, yet differences in communication styles or unresolved tension prevent either person from feeling fully understood.

Line 3 can display rigid pride when challenged, making immediate confrontation counterproductive while feelings remain sensitive. Allowing a natural cooling-off period lets misunderstandings clear without defensive posturing.

Give the relationship gentle space so mutual appreciation can resurface without friction.

Wealth

Promising investments or financial initiatives hold solid long-term value, yet immediate liquidity constraints or external regulations block quick realization.

The classical imagery of untasted delicacies warns against deploying aggressive tactics to force financial outcomes ahead of schedule. Maintaining strict capital discipline and refining existing holdings safeguards your resources until timing improves.

Safeguard your existing resources and let conditions mature before pursuing expansion.

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

行 is pronounced xià-mèng (hàng).塞 is pronounced xī-zé (sè).

Residing in the belly of the cauldron with a yang line, it inherently possesses fine contents.

However, being overly rigid and lacking the Central Position, leaping over the fifth line to correspond with the top, and dwelling at the extreme of the lower trigram during a time of revolutionary change, it represents the cauldron's ears undergoing alteration so that it cannot be lifted or moved.

Although it receives the richness of the upper trigram's civilization and possesses the savory delicacy of pheasant fat, it cannot be eaten by anyone. Nevertheless, as a yang line occupying a yang position, it has attained its correctness.

If it can guard itself, yin and yang will harmonize and its regret will disappear. For the diviner, acting like this means that although there is disadvantage at first, good fortune will be attained in the end.

折 is pronounced zhī-shé (zhé).覆 is pronounced fāng-fú (fù).餗 is pronounced sòng-liù (sù).渥 is pronounced yǐ-jiǎo (wò).

Master Chao says: 'Body drenched' (xíng wò) appears in various editions as 'execution punishment' (xíng wū), referring to severe corporal punishment; we follow that here.

Nine in the Fourth Place resides above and bears heavy responsibilities, yet corresponds below with the yin of Six at the Beginning, making it unable to bear its burden. Hence it holds this image, and its divination is ominous.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The ears of the cauldron are Six in the Fifth Place, the master of the cauldron. The third line resides above Xun as a yang line; being strong yet capable of gentle compliance, its talent is sufficient to accomplish affairs.

However, it does not correspond with the fifth line and is not aligned with it: the fifth holds the Central Position but is not correct; the third is correct but not in the Central Position; they are different. It has not won favor with the ruler.

Without the ruler's favor, how can its way be carried out? 'Altered' means changed and alienated: the third and fifth are different and do not harmonize.

'Its movement is blocked' means it cannot achieve prevalence; failing to harmonize with the ruler, it does not obtain office and has no way to apply its abilities. 'Fat' is sweet and savory food, symbolizing rank and emolument.

'Pheasant' refers to the fifth line: possessing the virtue of cultural brightness, it is called a pheasant. Nine in the Third Place has talent and utility, but does not attain the rank and emoluments of Six in the Fifth Place; this is not being able to eat the pheasant fat.

When a noble person stores up virtue, it will inevitably shine forth over time; when guarding the Way, it will eventually prevail.

The fifth line has the image of brightness and discernment, while the third line is ultimately an entity that advances upward; when yin and yang mingle freely, rain falls.

'Rain is about to fall' means rain is on the verge of falling, saying that the fifth and third lines are just about to harmonize. 'Regret is diminished, ultimate good fortune' means that the regret of unfulfillment will ultimately lead to good fortune.

Nine in the Third Place cherishes talent but finds no opportunity, hence it has the regret of unfulfillment. Yet because it has strong yang virtue, with discernment above and gentle correctness below, they will ultimately achieve mutual accord; hence it is auspicious.

Although the third line does not hold the Central Position, belonging to the Xun body, it is free from the error of excessive rigidity; were it excessively rigid, how could it attain ultimate good fortune?

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

That it was initially alienated and altered from the cauldron's ears was because it lost the principle of mutual seeking. Lacking correspondence with the fifth line, it lost the way of seeking harmony; not holding the Central Position, it lacked the image of shared purpose.

For this reason, its movement was blocked and could not flow. Yet the one above is discerning and the one below is talented; they will ultimately harmonize, so when rain is about to fall, good fortune ensues.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

The meaning of The Cauldron is to be hollow in the middle to receive things. Yet Nine in the Third Place resides at the top of the lower trigram; being yang in a yang position, it guards its fullness without correspondence, accepting nothing.

The ears ought to be hollow to receive the carrying bar, but instead they are entirely solid and blocked; hence it is said, 'The cauldron's ears are altered, its movement is blocked,' and although there is pheasant fat, it ultimately cannot be eaten.

Rain represents the harmonious blending of yin and yang without one-sided excess. Although it is a yang line, it belongs under a yin hexagram.

If it does not rely entirely on rigid arrogance, but strives for harmonious breakthrough, then when 'rain is about to fall,' regret diminishes, and in the end there is good fortune.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

From 'Nine in the Third Place: The cauldron's ears are altered' to 'ultimate good fortune.'

Correct Meaning: 'The cauldron's ears are altered, its movement is blocked': the meaning of The Cauldron is solid below and hollow above, being empty to receive things. The function of the 'cauldron's ears' likewise ought to be empty to receive the carrying bar.

Now Nine in the Third Place resides at the top of the lower trigram, corresponding to the ears of this cauldron; it ought to occupy an empty position, yet being a yang line in a yang position, it occupies fullness with fullness.

Being solid rather than hollow, it alters the normal meaning of the cauldron's ears. The place that normally receives objects and takes in the bar is now blocked; hence it is said, 'The cauldron's ears are altered, its movement is blocked.'

'Pheasant fat is not eaten': not only is its body solid and unreceptive, but Top Nine does not correspond with it, nor does it admit anything; though the vessel exists, it has no use, and though there is pheasant fat, it cannot be eaten; hence it says, 'Pheasant fat is not eaten.'

'Rain is about to fall, diminishing regret; ultimate good fortune': 'Rain represents the harmonious blending of yin and yang without one-sided excess. Although it is a yang line, it belongs under a yin hexagram.

If it does not rely entirely on rigid arrogance, but strives for harmonious breakthrough,' when it is just about to effect this harmonious breakthrough, regret diminishes and in the end good fortune is attained; hence it is said, 'Rain is about to fall, diminishing regret; ultimate good fortune.'

Correct Meaning: 'Losing its proper meaning' means losing the principle of being hollow in the middle to receive things.
