Classical commentary

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Both The Well and The Cauldron take issuing forth at the top as their function; residing at the end marks the completion of the cauldron's work. It presents the image of being above; that which is firm yet warm and mild is jade.

Although Top Nine is strong yang, it dwells in a yin position and treads upon yielding; not being excessively rigid, it is able to be warm and gentle.

The way to reside in completed success lies solely in handling it well: when firmness and yielding are appropriately balanced, and movement and stillness do not exceed bounds, there is supreme good fortune with nothing that is not beneficial.

Residing at the top, it serves as the carrying ring; though dwelling in a position without rank, it actually bears utility, which differs from other hexagrams. The Well is also like this.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Being firm yet warm is to have proper moderation. The top line resides in the position of completed success and practical application, and its firmness and yielding hit the proper measure; therefore there is supreme good fortune with nothing that is not beneficial.

Both The Well and The Cauldron take the end as completed success, but why does The Cauldron not say 'paramount good fortune' (yuán jí)?

The answer is: the merit and function of The Well all lie in issuing forth at the top, and it also possesses the virtue of wide giving with constancy; hence it has paramount good fortune.

The Cauldron takes cooking as its function; residing at the top signifies completed virtue, differing from The Well; because its firmness and yielding maintain moderation, it attains supreme good fortune.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Residing at the end of The Cauldron marks the completion of the Way of the Cauldron.

Dwelling in the completion of The Cauldron, embodying firmness while treading upon yielding, employing strength to provide the carrying rings; residing above in this manner, its height is free from the warning of being overbearing, attaining the proper balance of firmness and yielding, capable of lifting its responsibilities.

Because its correspondence is not restricted to one, there is nothing it does not lift; hence it is said, 'Supreme good fortune, nothing that does not bring benefit.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Correct Meaning: 'The cauldron has jade carrying rings': jade is hard and firm yet smooth and lustrous.

Top Nine resides at the end of The Cauldron, the completion of the Way of the Cauldron; embodying firmness while residing in yielding, it uses jade carrying rings to lift itself up; hence it says, 'The cauldron has jade carrying rings.'

'Supreme good fortune, nothing that does not bring benefit': its correspondence is not confined to one, meaning there is nothing it does not lift; hence it attains 'supreme good fortune' and 'nothing that does not bring benefit.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Correct Meaning: 'Firmness and yielding maintain moderation': treading upon yielding with firmness, although it is at the top, it does not become the 'arrogant dragon' of The Creative (Heaven); hence it is said, 'firmness and yielding maintain moderation.'

Yicuo JinLine statement

Top Nine, Sixth Line (Top-Top): Noble guests naturally draw near; fame and merit are achieved as easily as turning one's hand. When acquiring gold, one must accumulate virtue; gaze upward as the morning sun ascends.
