If this line changes it transforms into 31. Influence (Wooing) (咸)

Modern reading

Six at the third position sits at the threshold of the lower trigram without resonance above, feeling isolated from the central assembly. Progress comes from putting aside pride and aligning with the supportive dynamic line above, accepting minor friction to avoid true harm.

I Ching casting

Occupying a transitional place without proper resonance, Six at the third position laments its inability to gather effortlessly with the group. The classical Xiang commentary observes that moving forward brings no blame because one yields to the strong line above.

Yielding flexible compliance allows you to overcome initial social awkwardness and find your footing.

Career

In workplace initiatives, you may feel detached from the main circle or starved of prime resources, leading to momentary frustration. Classical interpretations suggest that striving alone is futile here; instead, attach yourself to established leaders or competent teams.

Enduring modest compromises early on allows you to integrate successfully and regain momentum.

Love & relationships

Romantic interactions may currently feel one-sided or lacking reciprocal warmth, sparking feelings of being left out. Rather than nursing resentment, return to yourself and examine whether you are truly compatible.

Rationally adjusting your expectations and maintaining appropriate self-respect helps the emotional haze gradually dissipate.

Wealth

Financial efforts may stall due to isolated positioning and limited access to insider coordination. Classical prudence advises against independent speculation or forced expansion at this stage, favoring alignment with reliable, low-risk structures.

Tolerating smaller immediate gains keeps your overall capital secure and free from regret.

Line statement

3. The third line, divided, shows its subject striving after union and seeming to sigh, yet nowhere finding any advantage. If he go forward, he will not err, though there may be some small cause for regret.

Small Image

‘If he go forward, he will not err:’—in the subject of the topmost line there is humility and condescension.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

The character jia (假) is read with the fanqie geng-bai. Gathering Together means assembling. Kun is yielding and Dui is joyous; Nine in the Fifth Place is firm and central, and the second line corresponds to it.

Furthermore, it is the image of a lake rising above the earth and the ten thousand things gathering together; hence it is Gathering Together. The character heng (亨) is a superfluous character.

"The king approaches his ancestral temple" means the king can arrive inside the ancestral temple; this is an auspicious divination for a king divining a sacrifice. As the Meaning of Sacrifices says: "The Duke approaches the Grand Temple," which is this.

The temple is where the spiritual essence of the ancestors is gathered; moreover, a person must be able to gather his own spiritual essence before he can arrive at the temple and receive his ancestors.

When things have gathered, one must see the great person before one can obtain smooth passage; yet it must also be advantageous to be steadfast. If what is gathered is not correct, it cannot prevail either.

Great sacrificial animals must be gathered before there is a gathering, and then one can have somewhere to go. These are all statements of auspicious divination accompanied by warnings. Shuo (説) is pronounced yue (joyous).

Explains the hexagram name and meaning by virtue and structure of the trigrams. Explains the hexagram judgment. Carries its principle to the utmost and praises it.

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Six in the Third Place is yin and yielding, neither central nor correct, and lacks a correspondence above. It wishes to seek a gathering with those near, but cannot obtain it; hence it sighs with lamentation and has no advantage anywhere.

Only by going forward to follow the uppermost line can it be without blame. Yet unable to obtain its gathering and proceeding only after being exhausted, and moreover reaching an uppermost yin line that has no position, it is also cause for slight shame.

The diviner is warned that he must discard the improper strong support close at hand, and form a bond afar with a proper correspondence in straitened circumstances; then there will be no blame.

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

Above it is adjacent to Nine in the Fifth Place; below it is adjacent to the multitude of yin lines; it attains its gathering.

Yet because it is a yang line dwelling in a yin place, it is not correct; hence the diviner is warned that he must have great good fortune before he can be free of blame.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Six in the Third Place is a person of yin yielding, neither central nor correct. It seeks to gather with others, yet no one joins with it. Seeking the fourth, the fourth is not its proper correspondence nor of its kind; because it is not correct, it is rejected by the fourth.

Seeking the second, the second uses its own centrality and correctness to correspond to the fifth; because the third is not correct, it is not joined by the second.

Therefore, wishing to gather, it is cast off by others and sighs with lamentation—lamenting and regretting that it cannot gather. Both above and below do not join with it, so there is no advantage anywhere.

Only by going and following Six at the Top can it attain its gathering and be without blame.

Although Six in the Third Place and Six at the Top are not a proper yin-yang correspondence, in the time of Gathering Together things follow their own kind: both dwell with yielding lines at the top of their respective trigrams, and both have no partner, dwelling in corresponding positions.

Moreover, the upper line dwells at the extreme of joyous compliance; hence Six in the Third Place attains its gathering and is free of blame. The Way of Changes transforms without constancy, resting on human discernment. Yet why is there "slight distress"?

The third initially sought to gather with the fourth and second, and only after failing did it go to follow Six at the Top. When human conduct is like this, even though it attains what it seeks, it is still cause for slight shame and distress.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The top dwells at the extreme of yielding and joy; that the third goes and incurs no blame is because Six at the Top complies gently and receives it.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Treading in a position not its own, it is adjacent to the fourth, while the fourth also loses its proper position. When the incorrect gather together, and the gathering is not correct, troubles are born.

Interfering with another's correspondence, harms arise; hence "gathering and sighing, nothing is advantageous."

Six at the Top also has no correspondence and stands alone; dwelling at the extreme, it worries about danger, thinking of aid and seeking companions, treating things with gentle compliance.

Rather than gathering in incorrectness, it is better to go to one of shared will; hence it can go and be without blame. Yet two yin lines joining together are still not as good as the correspondence of one yin and one yang; hence there is "slight distress."

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

"Six in the Third Place gathers and sighs" up to "slight distress." The Sub-commentary states: Dwelling in the time of Gathering Together, "treading in a position not its own, it is adjacent to the fourth, while the fourth also loses its proper position.

When the incorrect gather together, and the gathering is not correct, troubles are born. Interfering with another's correspondence, harms arise"; hence it is said, "Gathering and sighing, nothing is advantageous."

As for "going brings no blame, slight distress," "Six at the Top also has no correspondence and stands alone; dwelling at the extreme, it worries about danger, thinking of aid and seeking companions, treating things with gentle compliance.

Rather than gathering in incorrectness, it is better to go to one of shared will; hence it can go and be without blame."

However, because Six at the Top is yin, and oneself is also yin, "two yin lines joining together are still not as good as the correspondence of one yin and one yang; hence there is slight distress."

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

The Sub-commentary states: Because the upper trigram's substance is yielding and compliant, seeking its companions, the third can go and be without blame.
