I Ching casting

Having emerged from the lower abyss into the illuminating fire trigram, this firm line responds to the lowest yielding line and channels disciplined momentum.

The classical line commentary invokes a prolonged campaign against distant adversaries, which the Xiang commentary interprets as the fulfillment of deliberate will.

Transitioning toward Hexagram 4, Enveloping, the reading suggests that clarity follows the patient mastery of trial and error. Sustained commitment through past turbulence now clears the way for legitimate reward and lasting stability.

Career

A protracted period of grueling effort, market groundwork, or crisis resolution is finally moving beyond its most taxing phase.

Classical analysis indicates that holding to professional integrity and executing remaining duties with vigor will earn leadership trust and formal accolades. The groundwork laid during leaner times now provides the structural foundation for strategic expansion.

Maintain your professional discipline, as the long trial is giving way to visible recognition.

Love & relationships

A romantic bond that has weathered extended uncertainty, external friction, or prolonged separation has proven its underlying resilience. The line attributes highlight fidelity and enduring patience, showing that shared trials have forged deep mutual trust.

Both parties are positioned to move past old grievances into an era of mutual validation and shared security. Remaining faithful through previous hardship has built a durable foundation for genuine companionship.

Wealth

Long-term financial initiatives or patient asset strategies that required sustained endurance are now poised to transition from cultivation to yield. Classical commentary emphasizes that enduring earlier lean periods preserves long-run value and dispels past anxieties.

Discipline remains essential, favoring structured, transparent holdings over impulsive speculative pivots. Trusting a well-considered, patient approach to capital management yields tangible peace of mind.

Classical commentary

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Nine in the Fourth Place possesses yang firmness and occupies the position of a great minister; above, there is an open-hearted, enlightened, and compliant ruler, and it has already emerged from danger.

Before Completion has already passed the midpoint; there is a way to achieve completion. Rescuing the world from hardship cannot be accomplished without firm and vigorous talent.

Although nine is yang, it dwells in the fourth position, hence it is warned that only steadfast uprightness brings good fortune and causes regret to vanish; lacking steadfastness, one cannot achieve completion and will have cause for regret.

Thunderous shock reaches its peak; among the ancients, those who exerted utmost effort were exemplified by attacking the Guifang, hence the meaning is drawn from this.

Laboring with diligence and campaigning far away, only after three years was success attained and rewards of great states bestowed. Only in this manner can completion be achieved.

The way to complete the affairs of the world must be steadfast like this; because Line Four occupies a yielding position, this warning was established.

With talent like that of Line Four, matching the time and bolstered by steadfastness, one can carry out one's aspirations: good fortune ensues and regret vanishes. The campaign against the Guifang represents the utmost steadfastness.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling in a time of Before Completion, yet having emerged above peril and hardship, it occupies the beginning of civilized clarity, embodies a firm nature, and is close to the supreme ruler.

Although it treads a position not its own, if its will is set on correctness, good fortune ensues and regret vanishes. Its will being carried out, nothing can restrain its awe-inspiring might; hence it is said: 'With thunderous shock he attacks the Guifang.'

'Attacking the Guifang' is an expedition of revival from decline; hence whenever decline and revival are involved, this meaning is drawn. Dwelling at the beginning of civilized clarity, just emerging from hardship, its virtue is not yet at its peak, hence it says 'three years.'

Line Five occupies the honored position with yielding, embodying the fullness of civilized clarity, never usurping the merit of others; therefore it rewards him with a great state.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Correct Meaning states: Dwelling in a time of Before Completion, treading out of its proper position is why there is regret.

Yet having emerged beyond peril and hardship, occupying the beginning of civilized clarity, with a firm and vigorous nature, and being close to the supreme ruler, its will is to practice correctness.

When correct, steadfastness brings good fortune and regret vanishes; hence it says 'steadfastness brings good fortune; regret vanishes.' Once its upright will is carried out, nothing can restrain its awe-inspiring power; hence it stirs up thunderous wrath to attack the Guifang.

Yet dwelling at the beginning of civilized clarity, just emerged from danger, its virtue is not yet full, so it cannot win immediate victory; hence it says 'three years.'

Line Five occupies the honored throne with compliant, yielding, civilized clarity and does not usurp the merit of others.

When Nine in the Fourth Place returns victorious, he will surely receive the reward of a great state of a hundred li; hence it is said: 'There are rewards in a great state.'

The Correct Meaning states: 'The will is carried out' explains why Nine in the Fourth Place, though losing its position, attains 'steadfastness brings good fortune; regret vanishes': because its upright will is carried out, ultimate good fortune follows.
