I Ching casting

Occupying the central and correct position of the upper trigram Lake, nine at the fifth place commands the collective drive toward breakthrough but sits right against the solitary yin line above.

The Xiang commentary observes that while walking the center avoids error, complete clarity has not yet shone forth because personal attachments risk muddying judgment.

Classical interpretation uses the weed-clearing metaphor to demand firm, objective pruning of entanglement without slipping into excess. Maintaining principled fairness ensures authority remains unquestioned and uncompromised.

Career

Leadership responsibilities require addressing deep-seated organizational drag or problematic relationships that have lingered too long out of sentiment. Lingering indecision or favoritism erodes team trust, making it vital to uphold institutional standards without personal bias.

The classical reading underscores that a clean, measured break preserves collective momentum. Establishing clear boundaries now cements your credibility as an impartial guide.

Love & relationships

Unresolved history or lingering boundary ambiguities threaten to drain the vitality of a core partnership. While addressing these entanglements may feel uncomfortable, dodging the conversation only prolongs subtle mistrust.

Classical wisdom highlights the power of balanced clarity to sweep away lingering emotional debris. Clean, compassionate honesty restores peace and mutual confidence.

Wealth

Portfolio health depends on terminating unproductive ventures or trimming underperforming holdings that linger out of habit. Hesitating to sever draining commitments diverts capital away from sound core opportunities.

Traditional analysis recommends a swift, clean purge guided by rational discipline rather than emotional attachment. Cutting out dead weight protects your broader financial foundation.

Line statement

5. The fifth line, undivided, shows (the small men like) a bed of purslain, which ought to be uprooted with the utmost determination. (The subject of the line having such determination), his action, in harmony with his central position, will lead to no error or blame.

Small Image

‘If his action be in harmony with his central position, there will be no error:’—but his standing in the due mean is not yet clearly displayed.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Xiàn is pronounced biàn. The purslane is today's purslane (portulaca), an herb heavily imbued with yin qi. Nine in the Fifth Place meets the time of Breakthrough; being the master of Breakthrough, it is intimately close to the yin of Six at the Top, just like purslane.

If it resolutely breaks through it without being excessively violent, according with acting in the middle way, there will be no blame. The diviner is admonished to act like this.

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

Cheng's commentary is comprehensive. His commentary states: 'The judgment text says making a resolute breakthrough brings no blame for acting in the middle way. The Xiang Commentary further exhausts its meaning, saying the center is not yet radiant.

When a person's heart is upright and thoughts are sincere, only then can he fulfill the way of centrality and correctness, being substantial and radiant.

The fifth line has a heart of intimacy, yet knowing it is unrighteous, it breaks through it; though its outward conduct does not lose the righteousness of centrality and correctness and thus avoids blame, in the middle way it has not attained greatness and radiance.

Whenever the human heart harbors a single selfish desire, it departs from the Dao. The Master's intent in showing this to humanity is profound.'

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Though the fifth line is firm and yang, central and correct, dwelling in the honored position, it is intimately close to Six at the Top. Six at the Top is in the joyous trigram and is the sole yin line of the hexagram, to which the yang lines draw close.

The fifth line is the master of eliminating yin, yet if it conversely attaches itself to it, its blame will be great. Therefore it must resolutely break through it like purslane; only then will its virtue of acting in the middle way be free from blame.

The middle way is the central course. Purslane is what is today called portulaca; when dried in the sun it is hard to desiccate, heavily imbued with yin qi, yet it is crisp and easily snapped.

If the fifth line is like purslane—though influenced by yin, snapping it is easy—then it will incur no fault in its acting in the middle way; otherwise, it will lose its centrality and correctness.

Among things heavily imbued with yin, purslane is easily snapped; hence it is taken as an image.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Purslane is a soft and brittle herb. Snapping it is exceedingly easy, hence it is said: 'resolute breakthrough.' The meaning of Breakthrough is to use the firm to decide the yielding, the noble person purging the petty person.

Yet the fifth line dwells in the honored position, closest to the petty person, deciding it in person. Using supreme honor to confront the lowest base, even if it overcomes, it is not worth praising.

Acting while dwelling in the center is merely sufficient to avoid blame, but not enough to be radiant.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

From 'Nine in the Fifth Place' to 'no blame.' Sub-commentary: Purslane is a soft and brittle herb. The meaning of Breakthrough is to use the firm to decide the yielding, the noble person purging the petty person.

The fifth line dwells in the honored position, being the master of Breakthrough; deciding Six at the Top in person, the decision is exceedingly easy, just like snapping purslane; hence 'a resolute breakthrough like purslane.'

However, using supreme honor to confront the lowest base, even if it overcomes, it is not worthy of esteem. Only because of acting in the middle way does it barely avoid blame; hence 'acting in the middle way brings no blame.' Note: 'Purslane is a soft and brittle herb.'

Sub-commentary: Zi Xia's commentary says: 'Purslane has woody roots and herbaceous stems, firm below and soft above.' Ma Rong, Zheng Xuan, and Wang Su all say: 'Purslane, another name is shanglu (pokeweed),' taking purslane as one single plant.

Huang Yu says: 'Xian is human amaranth; lu is pokeweed,' taking them as two. Note: the commentary directly says 'a soft and brittle herb,' which also treats them as one, agreeing with Zi Xia and others.

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Sub-commentary: 'The center is not yet radiant' means that although it acts while dwelling in the center, because it decides Six at the Top in person—using the honored to confront the base—it is not sufficient to be glorious and great.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Nine in the Fifth Place, fifth line, lower-low: Though the undertaking seems fraught with difficulty, sudden waves arise on level ground. In laughter and conversation there is caution after all; when the matter settles, the heart feels at peace.
