‘The Yellow lower-garment;—there will be great good fortune:’—this follows from that ornamental (colour’s) being in the right and central place.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Yellow is the central color; the lower garment (skirt) is an adornment worn below. Six in the Fifth Place occupies the honored position with a yin line; its virtues of centrality and compliance are filled within and manifest outwardly.

Therefore its image is like this, and its divination is supreme good fortune. For a diviner whose virtue matches this, the divination will also be like this.

The Zuo Zhuan records that when Nan Kuai was about to rebel, he divined and obtained this line, considering it greatly auspicious. Zifu Huibo said: "For affairs of loyalty and trust, it is permissible; otherwise, defeat is certain.

Being firm without and gentle within is loyalty; harmonizing to lead with uprightness is trust. Therefore it says: 'A yellow lower garment brings supreme good fortune.'

Yellow is the color of the center; the lower garment is the adornment of the lower body; 'supreme' is the chief of goodness.

If the center is not loyal, one does not attain its color; if subordinates are not respectful, they do not attain its adornment; if an affair is not good, it does not attain its culmination. Moreover, the Changes cannot be used to divine perilous undertakings.

If any of these three is lacking, even though the divination matches, it is not auspicious." Later, Nan Kuai was indeed defeated; from this, the method of divination can be seen. Refinement resides in the center and manifests outwardly.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Although The Receptive (Earth) represents the way of a minister, the fifth line is truly the ruler's position; hence the warning is given, saying "a yellow lower garment brings supreme good fortune." Yellow is the color of the center; the lower garment is apparel worn below.

Safeguarding the center and dwelling below brings supreme good fortune, meaning safeguarding one's proper station. "Supreme" means great and good.

The line's image merely says that safeguarding the center and dwelling below brings supreme good fortune, without exhausting its full meaning.

Since a yellow lower garment brings supreme good fortune, dwelling in the honored position to rule all under heaven brings great disaster, as can well be known. If later generations do not comprehend this, this principle will become obscured; it must be clarified.

The fifth position is an honored position; in other hexagrams, a six in the fifth place represents yielding compliance, civil brightness, or weakness; but in The Receptive (Earth), it represents occupying the honored ruler's position.

Yin represents the way of a minister and the way of a wife.

A minister occupying the honored position—as with Hou Yi or Wang Mang—can still be spoken of; a woman occupying the honored position—as with Nüwa or Empress Wu—is an extraordinary aberration that cannot even be spoken of.

Therefore, there is the warning of the yellow lower garment without exhausting all words. Some may wonder: in Revolution (Molting), the affairs of Tang and Wu were fully spoken of; why is it not fully spoken of here alone?

The answer is: the rise and fall of dynasties is a constant principle, but yin occupying the honored position is an extraordinary aberration. The Commentary on the Images says: "A yellow lower garment brings supreme good fortune; refinement resides in the center."

The refined patterns of yellow centrality reside in the center without excess; internally accumulating supreme beauty while dwelling below, it therefore brings supreme good fortune.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Yellow is the color of the center; the skirt is an adornment worn below. The Receptive (Earth) represents the way of a minister, whose beauty is fully realized below. Lacking firm vigor in substance, it is able to exhaust the sentiments of things and penetrate principles.

With the virtue of yielding compliance, it occupies an abundant position, entrusting itself to refinement and pattern. Trailing a yellow skirt to obtain supreme good fortune does not involve using military force.

Reaching the peak of yin's abundance, it does not rival yang, because "refinement resides in the center," which is the utmost of beauty.

Employing a yellow skirt and obtaining supreme good fortune is because "refinement resides in the center."

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

"Six in the Fifth Place: A yellow lower garment brings supreme good fortune." Zhengyi says: Yellow is the color of the center; the lower garment is an adornment worn below.

The Receptive (Earth) represents the way of a minister; the fifth line occupies the ruler's position, representing the most noble of ministers.

Being able to penetrate the patterns of things with central harmony and abide in a minister's duty, it says: "A yellow lower garment brings supreme good fortune." "Supreme" means great. Because its virtue and ability are like this, it attains great good fortune.

Commentary on "Yellow is the color of the center." Zhengyi says: "Yellow is the color of the center, and the lower garment is an adornment worn below" comes from the Zuo Zhuan, twelfth year of Duke Zhao.

The lower garment is worn below; thus the upper robe symbolizes the ruler, while the lower garment models the minister.

"Trailing a yellow skirt to obtain supreme good fortune does not involve using military force": because its substance lacks firm vigor, it does not employ majesty and force.

Possessing civil virtue within and penetrating the patterns of things, the Images says: "Refinement resides in the center."

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Zhengyi says: Explaining why "a yellow lower garment brings supreme good fortune," it is because its civil virtue resides within.

Possessing central harmony, upholding the duty of a minister, and penetrating civil patterns, it says refinement resides in the center, meaning it does not use majesty and force.
