Judgment

Pî indicates that (under the conditions which it supposes) there is good fortune. But let (the principal party intended in it) re-examine himself, (as if) by divination, whether his virtue be great, unintermitting, and firm. If it be so, there will be no error.

Those who have not rest will then come to him; and with those who are (too) late in coming it will be ill.

Tuan commentary

‘Pî indicates that there is good fortune:’—(the name) Pî denotes help; (and we see in the figure) inferiors docilely following (their superior).

‘Let (the principal party intended in it) reexamine himself, (as if) by divination, whether his virtue be great, unintermitting, and firm;—if it be so, there will be no error:—all this follows from the position of the strong line in the centre (of the upper trigram).

‘Those who have not rest will come to him:’—high and low will respond to its subject. ‘With those who are (too) late in coming it will be ill:’—(for them) the way (of good fortune here indicated) has been exhausted.

Great Image

(The trigram representing) the earth, and over it (that representing) water, form Pî. The ancient kings, in accordance with this, established the various states and maintained an affectionate relation to their princes.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiJudgment

Bi (Holding Together) means close attachment and support. Nine in the Fifth Place resides in the center of the upper trigram with yang firmness and attains its Correct Position; the five yin lines above and below cling to and follow it.

It presents the image of one man comforting myriad realms, and the four seas looking up to one man. Therefore, when the diviner obtains it, he will be sought after for alliance and support.

Yet he must consult the oracle again to examine himself: only if he possesses the virtues of supreme goodness, enduring constancy, and correct steadfastness can he prove worthy of the people's devotion and remain free from blame.

Those who have not yet allied and feel uneasy will also come to turn to him. If one is tardy and arrives late, the bonds of this union will have already solidified and the latecomer will find misfortune.

If one wishes to join with others, one should reflect on oneself in this same manner. These three characters are suspected to be an interpolation.

Zhouyi BenyiTuan commentary

This explains the name and meaning of the hexagram by its structure. This also explains the judgment text by the hexagram structure. Firm and central refers to the fifth line; above and below refer to the five yin lines.

Zhouyi BenyiGreat Image

Above the earth there is water; water clings to the earth without the slightest gap. Establishing states and treating feudal lords with affection was also the way the ancient kings allied with all under heaven without gap or estrangement.

The Tuan commentary takes the sense of others coming to ally with me; here it takes the sense of my going to ally with others.

Yichuan YizhuanJudgment

Holding Together in the Order of the Hexagrams: 'A host must have that which it holds together with; hence it is received by Holding Together.' Bi means close attachment and support.

Human beings must form close attachments and support one another to find peace; hence, once a host exists, it must have that with which it holds together. This is why Holding Together follows the Army.

As a hexagram, it has Kan above and Kun below; speaking of the two trigrams, water is upon the earth. Among things that adhere closely to each other without gap, nothing equals water on the earth; hence it is Holding Together.

Furthermore, all the other lines are yin, while the fifth line alone occupies the ruler's throne with yang firmness; the multitude clings to it with devotion, and the ruler above shows affection to those below, hence it is Holding Together. Holding Together is an auspicious path.

People attaching to and supporting one another naturally constitutes a fortunate way; hence the Miscellaneous Hexagrams says, 'Holding Together brings joy, the Army brings sorrow.'

Yet forming attachments must follow the right way; if not in accord with the right way, regret and blame arise. Therefore, one must trace back to the source and divine whether one is suitable to hold together with, and then join with them.

Divination here refers to weighing and resolving, not strictly relying on yarrow stalks and tortoise shells. If the alliance possesses supreme goodness, enduring constancy, and correct steadfastness, there is no blame.

Supreme goodness means possessing the way of a ruler and elder; enduring constancy means it can last long; correct steadfastness means attaining the upright path.

When the superior attaches to the inferior, he must possess these three; when the inferior follows the superior, he must seek these three, and then there will be no blame.

When people cannot preserve their own peace and security, they come seeking close alliance; once they find the proper alliance, they can preserve their peace. In times of unease, one should naturally seek alliance with urgency.

If one stands aloof relying on oneself, and the intent to seek alliance is sluggish and late, then even a vigorous man meets misfortune. If a vigorous man still meets misfortune, how much more so the weak and yielding?

'Fu' (man) is an appellation for firmness and independence; the commentary says, 'Zinan is a true man,' and also, 'This is calling me not a true man.' Among all born between heaven and earth, none has ever survived without forming close bonds with others.

Even those of extreme firmness or yieldingness can never stand entirely alone. The way of Holding Together arises when both wills seek each other; if the two wills do not seek each other, estrangement follows.

The sovereign comforts and nurtures his subordinates, subordinates love and support the sovereign; relatives, friends, and village neighbors are all like this. Therefore, superior and inferior should unite their wills to follow each other.

If there is no intent to seek each other, separation and misfortune will result. In general, human feelings unite when seeking each other and estrange when holding off; when both hold off and wait, neither takes the lead.

Although attachment has its proper path, the desire to ally must not be delayed. The Tuan says: Holding Together brings good fortune.

Yichuan YizhuanTuan commentary

Holding Together brings good fortune: Holding Together is the path of auspiciousness. Things attaching to and supporting each other is an auspicious way. Holding Together means assisting: this explains the meaning of Bi; it means mutual affection and assistance.

Those below follow compliantly: this explains why the hexagram is Holding Together. The fifth line occupies the honored throne with yang, and the subordinates below follow compliantly to offer affection and support; this is why it is Holding Together.

Tracing back to the origin and resolving the way of mutual alliance: only when one attains supreme goodness, enduring constancy, and correct steadfastness can there be no blame.

The so-called supreme goodness, enduring constancy, and correct steadfastness are exemplified by the fifth line. Occupying the center and uprightness with yang firmness, it exhausts the excellence of the way of alliance.

Facing the honored position with yang firmness, it embodies the ruler's virtue, which is 'supreme goodness.' Dwelling in the center and attaining correctness, it can be 'enduring and correct.'

The hexagram judgment originally spoke generally of the way of alliance; the Tuan specifies supreme goodness, enduring constancy, and correctness because Nine in the Fifth Place dwells in the center and correctness with firmness.

In human life, people cannot preserve their peace and security alone, so they come seeking attachment and alliance. The people cannot preserve themselves, so they uphold a sovereign to seek peace; the sovereign cannot stand alone, so he protects the people to find security.

Coming to ally out of unease means that upper and lower respond to each other. Speaking from the impartiality of the sage, he seeks the alliance of all under heaven with utmost sincerity to bring peace to the people.

Speaking from the self-interest of later kings, if they do not seek the attachment of the common people, peril and ruin will arrive. Thus, the wills of superior and subordinate must respond to each other.

In terms of the hexagram, all the yin lines above and below hold together with the fifth line, and the fifth line holds together with its multitude, which is the mutual response of above and below.

The multitude must hold together to fulfill their lives; between heaven and earth, none has ever fulfilled life without mutual attachment. If the will to follow one another is not prompt and comes late, alliance cannot be achieved; then even a vigorous man meets misfortune.

Having nowhere to attach, one is crushed and brought to an impasse of calamity.

Yichuan YizhuanGreat Image

Among things that adhere closely to each other without gap, nothing equals water on the earth; this is why it is Holding Together. The ancient kings observed the image of Holding Together to establish myriad states and show affection to feudal lords.

Establishing myriad states was the means to bind the people together; showing affection to feudal lords was the means to bind all under heaven together.

Zhouyi ZhuTuan commentary

Dwelling in the time of Holding Together, when one traces back to the source to seek freedom from blame, could it be anything other than supreme goodness, enduring constancy, and correct steadfastness?

If factions form alliances without supreme goodness, enduring constancy, and correct steadfastness, it is the path of evil and misfortune. If one does not meet the proper ruler, then even with enduring constancy one cannot avoid blame.

The one who makes enduring constancy free of blame—is it not Nine in the Fifth Place alone? Above and below, there is no other yang to divide the people; the fifth line alone occupies the honored position, and none fail to turn to it.

Above and below respond to it, bringing both affection and peace; and when there is peace, those who are uneasy come to entrust themselves. Hence the uneasy realms arrive because 'above and below respond.'

Those who lack seek those who possess, while those who possess do not seek what is given; those in peril seek peace, while those in peace do not seek what is protected. Fire possesses warmth, so those who are cold draw near to it.

Thus, if one can truly maintain peace, the uneasy realms will arrive of their own accord. When an alliance is being formed and one alone lags behind, once the union is established, the latecomer will be punished; hence there is misfortune.

Zhouyi ZhuGreat Image

Myriad states are established through Holding Together; feudal lords are drawn close through Holding Together.

Zhouyi ZhengyiJudgment

Correct meaning: "Holding Together brings good fortune" means being able to form close attachments and thus obtain complete good fortune.

"Trace back to the origin, supreme goodness, enduring constancy, no blame": wishing to hold together, one must trace the feelings to their source and determine the intention through divination; only with supreme goodness, enduring constancy, and correct steadfastness can there be no blame.

"Supreme goodness, enduring constancy, and correct steadfastness" means that when two parties hold together, both must maintain enduring constancy.

"The uneasy realms come": this is a time of peace and joy; if one can form close bonds with others, then regions that are uneasy will all turn and come. "The latecomer meets misfortune": 'fu' is an auxiliary particle.

Alliance values promptness: if one arrives early, all will be close to oneself, hence the first to arrive enjoys good fortune; if one arrives late, others may become estranged and the alliance cannot form, hence "the latecomer meets misfortune."

Alternatively, 'fu' is taken as a grown man, meaning the person who arrives late.

Zhouyi ZhengyiTuan commentary

"The Tuan says" to "by firmness and centrality."

Correct meaning: "Holding Together brings good fortune" explains mutual attachment as good, saying that holding together with others brings good fortune.

"Holding Together means assisting" explains why Holding Together achieves good fortune, for Holding Together means others come to assist.

"Those below follow compliantly": those below follow those above, which is mutual assistance, referring to all the yin lines following Nine in the Fifth Place. From this upward, it explains why the name of Holding Together implies good fortune.

"Trace back to the origin, supreme goodness, enduring constancy, no blame, by firmness and centrality" explains the meaning of "trace back to the origin, supreme goodness, enduring constancy, no blame."

The reason it can be like this is that Nine in the Fifth Place is firm and occupies the center, thereby enabling those who hold together to attain supreme goodness, enduring constancy, and freedom from blame.

Commentary: From "Dwelling in the time of Holding Together" to "is it not Nine in the Fifth Place alone?"

Correct meaning: "When one traces back to the source to seek freedom from blame, could it be anything other than supreme goodness, enduring constancy, and correct steadfastness?"—yuan means probing the roots of those who ally, and shi means determining the feelings of seeking alliance through divination, so as to seek long-lasting freedom from blame.

"Could it be anything other than supreme goodness, enduring constancy, and correct steadfastness?": yuan means supreme; yong means enduring.

Possessing supreme, enduring, and correct steadfastness in oneself, one can probe the true sentiments of mutual alliance and achieve long-lasting freedom from blame, which refers to mutual attachment between both sides.

"If one does not meet the proper ruler, then even with enduring constancy one cannot avoid blame": if one does not meet an enlightened sovereign, then even if both parties hold enduring constancy in seeking each other, they still cannot avoid blame.

Though they have enduring constancy, without an enlightened ruler's illumination and awareness, their mutual attachment will appear like partisan factionalism, and thus blame is unavoidable.

"The one who makes enduring constancy free of blame—is it not Nine in the Fifth Place alone?": the one who enables allies to escape blame, preserve enduring constancy, and stay long without blame—could it be anyone other than Nine in the Fifth Place?

Because Nine in the Fifth Place is the master of Holding Together, firm and central, able to discern the true intentions of those who ally, it enables allies to preserve enduring constancy without inward blame.

Correct meaning: Explaining "the uneasy realms come"—because Nine in the Fifth Place occupies the center, the yin lines above and below all come to respond to it.

At this time, yin goes to hold together with yang, and before finding their proper place, the yin lines are all uneasy. "The latecomer meets misfortune, for his path is exhausted."

Correct meaning: Explaining "the latecomer meets misfortune." When all others have allied and one alone arrives late, the path of alliance is exhausted and there is no one left to hold together with; hence there is misfortune. This refers to Six at the Top.

Commentary: From "When an alliance is being formed" to "hence there is misfortune."

Correct meaning: "Once the union is established, the latecomer will be punished": when parties hold together, all come swiftly to forge ties; once the alliance is established, if one alone arrives late, the multitude will suspect him of division and disloyalty, and therefore he is punished with misfortune.

Zhouyi ZhengyiGreat Image

Correct meaning: "Establishing myriad states and showing affection to feudal lords" is not something that feudal lords or those below can undertake; hence it specifically refers to "ancient kings." "Establishing myriad states" means dividing the land and enfeoffing them.

"Showing affection to feudal lords" means granting noble ranks, rewards, and grace to treat them as friends. Myriad states refer to their territories, hence the term "established"; feudal lords refer to the rulers themselves, hence the term "shown affection."

Water upon the earth is like myriad states across the realm: making them hold together with one another is like water upon the earth flowing, moistening, and reaching all things; hence it says "above the earth there is water: Holding Together."
