‘By such a course there is happiness, and there will be great good fortune:’—(the subject of the line) employs the virtue proper to his central position to carry his wishes into effect.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Dwelling in the honored place as a yin line, it is the master of Peace; yielding, central, and emptying itself, it responds below to Nine in the Second Place—the way of good fortune. When Emperor Yi married off his younger sister, he also obtained this line in divination.

If the diviner acts like this, there will be blessings and supreme good fortune. Whenever the Classic mentions ancient figures, such as High Ancestor or Prince Jizi, all follow this pattern.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Historians refer to Tang as Tian Yi; later there was Emperor Zu Yi, who was also a worthy king; later still there was Emperor Yi. The 'Many Officers' says: 'From Tang the Successful to Emperor Yi, none failed to illustrate their virtue and care for sacrifices.'

It is not known precisely which ruler is meant by 'Emperor Yi.' Looking at the meaning of the line, Emperor Yi was the one who established the ritual ordinances for imperial princesses marrying down to vassals.

Since ancient times, imperial daughters had always married down, but only with Emperor Yi were ritual codes established requiring them to lower their noble rank in order to defer to their husbands.

Six in the Fifth Place, with yin yieldingness, occupies the ruler's throne and responds below to the firm and enlightened worthy in Nine in the Second Place.

Six in the Fifth Place can entrust its worthy minister and defer to him, just as Emperor Yi married off his sister; lowering her noble rank to defer to yang, she thereby receives blessing and supreme good fortune.

'Supreme good fortune' means great good fortune that is thoroughly good, referring to accomplishing the work of governing Peace.

The reason why one can obtain blessing and supreme good fortune is that one joins according to the central path and carries out one's will and desire.

Possessing the virtue of the center, one can employ a worthy who is firm and central; what one listens to and follows is entirely one's own will and desire. If it were not what one desired, how could one follow it?

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

A woman's marriage is called 'returning' (guī). 'Peace' is the time when yin and yang interact.

A woman occupies the honored position, treading the center and dwelling in compliance; she lowers herself to correspond with the second line, moved to mutual association, employing the center to fulfill her wish without violating ritual propriety.

'Emperor Yi marries off his sister' truly accords with this meaning. Treading compliance and dwelling in the center, fulfilling original wishes to attain blessing, she fully realizes the propriety of the mating of yin and yang; hence 'supreme good fortune.'
