Line statement

5. The fifth line, undivided, shows the geese gradually advanced to the high mound. (It suggests the idea of) a wife who for three years does not become pregnant; but in the end the natural issue cannot be prevented. There will be good fortune.

Small Image

‘In the end the natural issue cannot be prevented. There will be good fortune:’—(the subject of the line) will get what he desires.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

A mound is a high hill. Nine in the Fifth Place occupies the honored position; Six in the Second Place is the proper correlate below, but they are separated by the third and fourth lines. Yet in the end, their rectitude cannot be wrested away.

Therefore its image is like this, and for the diviner, acting like this brings good fortune. Both Mr. Hu and Mr. Cheng say that 'land' should be read as 'cloud-way,' meaning the path through the clouds. Reading it according to the rhyme today, this is indeed correct.

'Ritual ornaments' refers to decorations made of feathers, yaks' tails, banners, and standards. Nine at the Top is at the very height, going beyond the realm of human rank; yet its feathers can be used for ceremonial ornamentation.

Though its position is extremely high, it does not become an image of uselessness. Hence, its divination is that being like this brings good fortune.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

A mound is a high hill, the highest place where the wild geese rest. It symbolizes the ruler's position. Although Nine in the Fifth Place attains the honored position, during the time of Gradual Progress, the execution of its Dao cannot be hurried.

It has Six in the Second Place as its proper correlate, sharing the same virtue of central rectitude, yet they are separated by the third and fourth lines. Line Three is adjacent to Line Two, and Line Four is adjacent to Line Five—both block their intercourse.

Unable to unite immediately, 'the woman does not become pregnant for three years.' Yet the Dao of central rectitude inherently contains the principle of eventual success; how could what is incorrect obstruct or harm it for long?

Thus in the end nothing can overcome it, but their union proceeds gradually; ultimately, good fortune is attained. When the incorrect opposes central rectitude, it is merely a matter of a temporary moment; in the long run, how could it prevail?

The Xiang says: 'In the end nothing can overcome them, which brings good fortune; they attain what they desire.' When ruler and minister commune through central rectitude, their Dao ought to prevail.

Even if there are those who intervene and sever them, how could the meddlers prevail in the end? Slowly but surely they will attain what they desire; thus it is the good fortune of gradual progress.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

A mound is next to dry land. In advancing, one attains the Central Position, yet is obstructed by Lines Three and Four, unable to join with one's proper correlate; hence, 'the woman does not become pregnant for three years.'

Each treads on rectitude and dwells in the center; Lines Three and Four cannot block their path for long. Within three years, they will surely attain what they desire.

Advancing to rectify the state achieves success in three years; when success is achieved, the Dao brings salvation. Thus it does not exceed three years.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

From 'Nine in the Fifth Place: The wild goose gradually draws near the mound' to 'In the end nothing can overcome them; good fortune.' Rectified Meaning: 'The wild goose gradually draws near the mound'—a mound is next to dry land.

Nine in the Fifth Place advances to the Central Position and dwells in an honored and high station; hence it says, 'The wild goose gradually draws near the mound.'

'The woman does not become pregnant for three years'—it has a correlate in the second line, but is separated by the third and fourth lines, unable to unite with its correlate.

Thus the feelings and intentions of Two and Five merely resonate in affection from afar, yet are blocked and cannot commune; hence it says, 'The woman does not become pregnant for three years.'

'In the end nothing can overcome them; good fortune'—yet Two and Five unite because each treads rectitude and abides in the center; the third and fourth lines cannot block their path for long, and they will ultimately fulfill what they cherish; hence it says, 'In the end nothing can overcome them; good fortune.'

Commentary note from 'Advancing to rectify the state' to 'does not exceed three years.'

Rectified Meaning: 'Advancing to rectify the state, there is success in three years'—Nine in the Fifth Place occupies the honored seat and attains the position; hence it says, 'advancing to rectify the state.'

With success in three years, Lines Three and Four dare not block their way; hence it says, 'does not exceed three years.' Rectified Meaning: 'They attain what they desire' means that their desire lies in uniting in harmony with Line Two.

Since each treads central rectitude, nothing can overcome them, and they ultimately attain what they desire.
