I Ching casting

Entering the upper trigram of gentle wind as a yielding yin line atop the firm third line, this position naturally feels precarious, as wild geese do not naturally roost in trees.

Classical commentary notes that finding a flat branch allows the traveler to rest securely despite an imperfect environment, yielding without fault.

The Xiao Xiang commentary observes that compliance and gentleness avert danger, while the shift toward Hexagram 33 (Retreat) highlights the wisdom of tactical accommodation. Simply put, adapting smoothly to less-than-ideal circumstances allows you to stay safe and steady.

Career

Professional conditions may place you in an unfamiliar role or transitional environment that does not fully suit your primary preferences.

Rather than resisting structural awkwardness or demanding radical changes, adapting flexibly to existing workflows creates unexpected stability. Mediating between competing priorities with modesty and tact earns respect and shields you from friction.

Finding a workable compromise in your daily routine allows you to thrive even in an imperfect role.

Love & relationships

Relationship expectations may encounter daily realities that differ from idealized romantic visions. Embracing minor compromises and accommodating each other's habits creates a supportive, low-friction environment where mutual comfort can grow.

Classical traditions praise the art of yielding as the key to establishing domestic harmony where strain might otherwise arise. Accepting minor imperfections with grace helps both partners feel genuinely at home together.

Wealth

Financial conditions call for pragmatic holding patterns rather than expansive growth maneuvers. Allocating funds into low-volatility holdings or resilient defensive instruments offers dependable sanctuary while broader trends rebalance.

Maintaining flexibility and avoiding rigid commitments prevents unforced losses during uncertain market phases. Securing an unpretentious, dependable financial buffer keeps your balance sheet comfortably protected.

Line statement

4. The fourth line, divided, shows the geese gradually advanced to the trees. They may light on the flat branches. There will be no error.

Small Image

‘They may light on the flat branches:’—there is docility (in the line) going on to flexible penetration.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Pronounce 桷 (jué) as jiǎo.

Wild geese do not roost in trees; a flat branch (桷) is a horizontal bough. If it happens upon a flat branch, it can rest in peace. Six in the Fourth Place rides upon firmness yet is compliant and gentle; hence its image is such.

If the diviner acts accordingly, there will be no blame.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

In the time of gradual advance, the fourth line, as yin yielding, advances to occupy a position above firm yang. Firm yang ascends—how could it peacefully remain beneath yin yielding?

Therefore, the place where the fourth line dwells is not secure, like a wild goose advancing into a tree. The tree grows ever taller, carrying an image of insecurity; the webbed feet of the wild goose cannot grasp branches, so it does not roost in trees.

A flat branch is a horizontal bough: only atop a horizontal bough can it rest securely. This means that the position of the fourth line is inherently precarious; but if it can find the way to peace and tranquility for itself, there will be no blame.

It is like the wild goose in a tree: inherently insecure, but if it happens upon a flat branch to perch upon, it finds peace.

Six in the Fourth Place occupies a correct position and is gently compliant, so it ought to be without blame; that it is stated in terms of gain and loss is to clarify its meaning through gain and loss.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

A flat branch is a place of peace and safety. The way to seek peace lies solely in compliance and gentleness. If one's righteousness is compliant and correct, and one's demeanor humble and gentle, where could one dwell without finding peace?

Just like the fourth line, being compliant, correct, and gentle, it finds the flat branch.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

A bird taking to a tree attains what is suitable. 'It may find a flat branch' means encountering a secure roost. Although it rides upon firmness, their wills find mutual affinity.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Correct Meaning states: 'The wild goose gradually approaches the tree': 'a bird taking to a tree attains what is suitable.' Six in the Fourth Place advances and attains its position, hence it says 'the wild goose gradually approaches the tree.'

As for 'it may find a flat branch, without blame,' a flat branch (jué) is a rafter-like limb. Taking to a tree and meeting a branch suitable to serve as a perch takes its quality of being level, straight, and secure.

Six in the Fourth Place and the fifth line find mutual affinity, compliantly protecting each other; hence it says 'it may find a flat branch.' Having attained mutual affinity, it is free from the blame of riding upon firmness; hence it says 'without blame.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

The Correct Meaning states: 'Compliant and gentle' means that although the fourth line rides upon the third line's substance, it is gentle and attaches itself to those below; and although the third line is ridden upon, it complies upward to protect each other.

Thus Six in the Fourth Place attains its secure roost, which is what is meant by 'compliant and gentle.'
