Classical commentary

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Occupying the second place as a six, it is yielding, compliant, central, and correct, and serves as the lord of civilized brilliance. Above, it has a firm and yang ruler of identical virtue who resonates with it.

Being central and correct, it has no bias or obscurity; possessing civilized brilliance, it exhausts the principles of affairs; resonating above, it attains power and authority; having a compliant substance, it creates no defiance.

The time is right, the position is attained, and talent is sufficient; this is the utmost excellence in dealing with Revolution.

However, the minister's way should not be the pioneer of revolution, and must await the mutual trust of both superiors and inferiors; hence only 'on one's own day does one reform.'

With the talent and virtue of the second line, the place it occupies, and the time it meets, it is capable of reforming the abuses of the world and renewing the governance of all under Heaven.

It should advance to assist the ruler above to carry out its way; then it will be auspicious and without blame. If it does not advance, it loses the opportune time for action, which brings blame.

Because the second line is yielding and occupies an appropriate position, being yielding means its advance is deliberate, and being in an appropriate position means its dwelling is stable. Revolution is a momentous matter, hence this admonition is given.

The second line attains the center and resonates with firmness; it has not reached the point of erring through weakness. The sage, anticipating doubts that might warrant caution, clarified its meaning so that worthy talents would not miss the opportune moment for action.

Reforming on one's own day, advancing brings good fortune and no blame, for 'in going there will be celebration.'

This means one can reform the world's abuses and renew worldly affairs; staying still without acting shows a lack of dedication to rescuing the world from abuse, missing the time and incurring blame.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

The nature of yin is that it cannot lead the call; it is compliant and follows. It cannot reform on its own; only after the revolution is already determined can it follow. Hence it is said: 'On one's own day, then reform.'

Although the second and fifth lines have the difference of distinct water and fire substances, they both dwell in their respective centers, yin and yang resonating together.

In going, their wills must unite without worry of blame; therefore, advancing brings good fortune and no blame.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

From 'Six in the Second Place: On one's own day' down to 'no blame.'

The Correct Meaning states: 'On one's own day, then reform' means that the way of yin is yielding and weak, compliant in every matter; it cannot reform on its own, and only when the day of revolution is established can it follow. Hence it is said: 'On one's own day, then reform.'

'Advancing brings good fortune, no blame' means that it resonates with the fifth line: 'both dwelling in their respective centers, yin and yang resonating, in going their wills must unite without worry of blame.' Hence it is said: 'Advancing brings good fortune, no blame.'

Although the second and fifth resonate, water and fire have distinct substances, raising the suspicion of mutual conquest. Therefore it is said: 'No blame.'
