I Ching casting

Occupying the central seat of the upper fire trigram as a receptive yin line, Six in the fifth position maintains a direct resonance with the strong Nine in the second place.

The classical imagery of biting through meat evokes an effortless resolution of past grievances among kin and close associates.

With the transformation toward Hexagram 10, traditional commentary emphasizes mindful conduct and respectful engagement as the pathway to auspicious union. Approaching differences with modest goodwill effortlessly melts away long-standing barriers.

Career

When team division or conflicting perspectives stall momentum, exerting top-down pressure only hardens resistance. The classical text observes that uniting with capable peers brings cause for celebration, showing that bridging hierarchical gaps yields immediate breakthroughs.

Extending an olive branch to frontline contributors restores unity and accelerates execution. Listening empathetically to core colleagues will transform friction into productive collaboration.

Love & relationships

Lingering emotional cool-offs or family resistance find a natural turning point under this line's unifying influence. Classical traditions view this dynamic as one of spontaneous reconciliation, where past defenses give way to heartfelt tenderness once pride is set aside.

Taking the first gentle step to reconnect invites a warm and reciprocal response. An earnest gesture of warmth will heal old misunderstandings and bring you closer together.

Wealth

Negotiations or joint ventures that previously stalled over conflicting interests now find an easy path to consensus. The transformation into Treading advises adhering strictly to fair terms and transparent conduct so that shared gains are equitably divided.

Leaning on trusted circles and familiar connections provides steady financial traction. Aligning transparently with reliable associates turns stalled agreements into profitable shared ventures.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Shì is pronounced shì-zhì-fǎn.

Because yin occupies a yang position, there is regret; but dwelling in the center and obtaining a partner, it is able to make it vanish. 'His clan' refers to Nine in the Second Place. 'Biting through the flesh' signifies ease of union.

Six in the Fifth Place possesses the virtue of yielding centrality, hence its image and divination are such.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Six, being yin and yielding in a time of Opposition while occupying the honored seat, understandably has regret. However, below there is the firm, yang worthy of Nine in the Second Place who corresponds with and assists it; therefore regret vanishes.

'His clan' means his faction, referring to the proper partner Nine in the Second Place. 'Biting through flesh' means biting into the muscle and penetrating deeply. In a time of Opposition, if one does not penetrate deeply, how could there be union?

Though Five possesses only yin and yielding talent, Two assists it with the way of firm yang and penetrates deeply; then going forward brings blessings, and what fault or blame could there be?

In the cases of King Cheng of Zhou's youth when the rule of sage kings flourished, and Liu Shan's dim weakness when a restoration posture was maintained, it was because they entrusted themselves to the assistance of sage worthies, and the Duke of Zhou and Kongming were able to penetrate deeply.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The line text merely says that when his clan bites through the flesh, one may go forward without blame.

The Xiang Commentary further elaborates its meaning, stating that even if a ruler's own talent is insufficient, if he can trust a worthy assistant and allow him to penetrate deeply into himself through the Dao, he will be able to accomplish deeds, which means going forward brings blessings.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Not in the proper position brings regret; having a partner allows regret to vanish. 'His clan' refers to Two. 'Biting through flesh' means biting into what is soft and yielding.

Although Three is adjacent to Two, it is what Two bites through, not something that can hinder Two's resonance with oneself. Going forward with this, what blame could there be? Going forward, they will surely unite.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

'Six in the Fifth Place: regret vanishes...' down to 'going forward, what blame?'

The Correct Meaning states: 'Regret vanishes': having lost the proper seat brings regret; 'having a resonance, regret vanishes'. 'His clan bites through flesh; going forward, what blame?': clan means lord or leader, referring to Two.

'Biting through flesh' refers to biting through Three. Although Three separates Two, Two bites through it; hence it is said: 'His clan bites through flesh.' Three is a yin line, hence 'flesh' is used as a metaphor, signifying softness and fragility.

Once Two bites through Three to reach Five, one may go forward and be 'without blame'; hence it is said: 'Going forward, what blame?'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

'The Xiang Commentary says...' down to 'going forward brings blessings.'

The Correct Meaning states: 'Going forward brings blessings': 'blessings' refers to good works extending to all things, so that things rely upon them.

Though Five occupies the honored seat without proper correctness, by uniting in virtue with Two, it becomes relied upon by all things; hence it is said, 'Going forward brings blessings.'

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six in the Fifth Place, fifth line, Lower-Middle: The boat paddles against the rushing midstream; blossoms open, yet spring arrives late. Affairs settle but the heart finds no peace, stirring up endless doubts and suspicions.
