I Ching casting

Occupying the lowest rank of the receptive Earth trigram, the yin line attempts to advance toward the fourth yang but meets early pushback, styled in the line text as advancing yet checked.

The Xiaoxiang Commentary notes that proceeding solo on righteous principles protects the traveler, while generous forbearance removes blame as the hexagram transforms toward Shi Ke.

When early progress encounters skepticism, maintaining inner composure without taking offense preserves long-term promise.

Career

In a fresh role or newly launched project, initial proposals may confront bureaucratic inertia, peer skepticism, or delayed supervisory approval. Forcing an immediate resolution under these conditions will only amplify friction and invite misunderstandings.

Focus on fulfilling fundamental duties with quiet grace, and time will prove the soundness of your work.

Love & relationships

Romantic connections are in an exploratory, cautious phase where the other party may remain guarded or emotionally reserved. Pressing for declarations or quick intimacy can create needless distance, whereas patient goodwill creates safety.

Offer generous breathing room, and genuine rapport will develop naturally at its own pace.

Wealth

Financial initiatives are in the seed stage, making immediate windfalls unlikely and minor logistical delays common. This is a moment for disciplined budgeting and conserving principal rather than pursuing speculative gambles.

Prudent oversight today builds the steady framework required for future gains.

Line statement

1. The first line, divided, shows one wishing to advance, and (at the same time) kept back. Let him be firm and correct, and there will be good fortune. If trust be not reposed in him, let him maintain a large and generous mind, and there will be no error.

Small Image

‘He appears wishing to advance, but (at the same time) being kept back:’—all-alone he pursues the correct course. ‘Let him maintain a large and generous mind, and there will be no error:’—he has not yet received an official charge.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Dwelling at the bottom with a Yin line and lacking a central and correct correspondence, it bears the image of wishing to advance but meeting restraint.

If a diviner like this can preserve correctness, it is auspicious; even if he is not trusted by others, if he can dwell in generous ease, he will be free of blame.

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

The initial line dwells in a lowly position and has not yet received an appointment to official duty.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The initial line dwells at the base of Jin, the beginning of advancement. Jìn-rú means ascending and advancing; cuī-rú means being checked and turned back.

Speaking of the beginning of advancement, whether one succeeds or fails to advance, only attaining correctness brings good fortune. 'Without confidence/trust' means that dwelling below at the start of advancing, how could one immediately be deeply trusted by superiors?

If superiors do not yet trust oneself, one should rest peacefully within, guard oneself, and remain spacious and generous, not rushing to seek trust from above.

If one's desire for trust is overly eager, one will either lose one's integrity through restless grasping, or harm righteousness through resentful indignation—both incur blame.

Therefore, remaining generous brings freedom from blame; this is how the gentleman handles the Dao of advancing and retreating.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Neither pushing forward nor shrinking back, one solely walks the correct Dao. Generous ease brings freedom from blame because one has just begun wishing to advance and has not yet assumed official position.

When a gentleman faces advancement or retreat, whether slowly or swiftly, he follows only what righteousness requires, never failing to be generous and at ease.

The sage feared that later generations, failing to grasp the meaning of generous ease, might abandon their duties and neglect their responsibilities while in office, mistaking it for generous ease; hence he specifically said that for Six at the Beginning, generous ease brings freedom from blame because, at the onset of advancement, one has not yet received an appointment or assumed official charge.

If one holds an official post and is not trusted by superiors, thereby losing his duties, he cannot remain there for even a single day. Yet affairs are not uniform; whether to linger or depart swiftly depends on the time, and there may also be signs that allow action.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling at the beginning of compliance and responding to the start of brightness, the virtue of bright compliance will flourish from here.

Advancing with brightness and retreating with compliance, not losing correctness, hence it is said: 'Advancing, restrained; perseverance brings good fortune.'

Dwelling at the start of the Gua, its merit and achievements are not yet apparent, and others do not yet trust it, hence 'without trust.' Just stepping onto the start of the Gua and not yet arriving at an official post, if one takes this as sufficient, one loses one's growth.

Therefore, one must be 'generous' with it, and only then is there 'no blame.'

Zhouyi ZhuSmall Image

Not having yet attained an official post, it 'has not yet received a mandate.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

From 'Six at the Beginning: advancing, restrained' to 'no blame.' The Correct Meaning says: Regarding 'advancing, restrained; perseverance brings good fortune,' Master He says: 'Cuī means retreat. Yù means generous and broad. Rú is a particle.'

Six at the Beginning dwells at the start of compliance, 'responding to the start of brightness; the virtue of bright compliance will flourish from here.'

Advancing, it heads toward brightness; retreating, it abides in compliance; in advancing and retreating, it does not lose its correctness, hence it says 'advancing, restrained; perseverance brings good fortune.'

'Without trust' means dwelling at the start of the Gua, its merits are not yet apparent and it is not yet trusted by others, hence 'without trust.' 'Generous, no blame': yù means broad and generous.

'Just stepping onto the start of the Gua and not yet arriving at an official post,' one must not take this as sufficient; if one does, it means 'forfeiting one's own growth.'

Therefore, one must broaden and enrich one's virtue so that merit and deeds become vast, and only then is there 'no blame'; hence 'generous, no blame.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

From 'The Xiang says' to 'has not yet received a mandate.' The Correct Meaning says: 'Solely walking in correctness': 'solely' means exclusively, indicating that whether advancing or retreating, one exclusively practices correctness.

'Generous, no blame; has not yet received a mandate' means that at the start of advancing, one has not yet attained an official post nor received an bestowed mandate; therefore, one should generously advance in virtue, and only then attain 'no blame.'

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six at the Beginning, initial line, upper-middle fortune: One must exert strength and not wander idle. Cast the long rod toward the toad's cavern; aim straight into the clouds to catch the giant sea turtle.
