I Ching casting

Nine in the third place is overly rigid and lacks legitimate correspondence above, attempting to seize alliance by ambush while fearing the superior strength of Nine in the fifth.

Transforming into Hexagram 25, the Little Xiang notes that remaining immobilized for three years stems from facing an unyielding opponent who cannot be overcome through deceit. Harboring covert schemes and defensive malice only entraps you in protracted stagnation.

Career

Workplace rivalries conducted through passive aggression, covert surveillance, or backdoor maneuvering will completely stall your progress. Attempting to unseat established leaders or undercut peers through stealth invites severe counter-resistance that you cannot overcome.

Dropping underground politicking and redirecting your energy into legitimate performance is the only way out of gridlock.

Love & relationships

Mutual guardedness, jealousy, or covert testing can drag an intimate relationship into an exhausting, prolonged cold war. When self-protection turns into emotional ambushing, all authentic intimacy dissolves beneath heavy suspicion.

Laying down defenses and speaking with unvarnished honesty offers the only path toward restoring emotional peace.

Wealth

Aggressive financial plays motivated by envy or attempts to outmaneuver competitors through dubious loopholes risk trapping capital in long-term illiquidity. The text's image of three years without advancement warns against contentious speculation that freezes your assets.

Stepping back from hostile bidding wars and honoring transparent boundaries protects your solvency.

Line statement

3. The third line, undivided, (shows its subject) with his arms hidden in the thick grass, and at the top of a high mound. (But) for three years he makes no demonstration.

Small Image

‘He hides his arms in the thick grass:’—because of the strength of his opponent. ‘For three years he makes no demonstration:’—how can he do anything?

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

It means being unable to act.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Nine in the Third Place, being a yang line dwelling in a firm position and failing to attain the center, represents a violent and reckless person.

In a time of Fellowship with Men, his will is set on fellowship; the hexagram has only one yin, which all the yang lines desire to associate with, and the third line is moreover adjacent to it.

However, the second corresponds with the fifth through the way of centrality and correctness; the third, with rigid force, sits between the second and fifth, wishing to seize the second for fellowship.

Yet his reasoning is not upright and his righteousness does not prevail; therefore he dares not act openly, but conceals weapons in the thickets. Harboring malice and inwardly conscious of being in the wrong, he is also fearful, constantly ascending high mounds to watch and wait.

Continuing thus for three years, he ultimately dares not rise. This line reveals deeply the dispositions of a small man. Yet it does not say 'misfortune,' because since he dares not launch an attack, it has not yet reached disaster.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The opponent faced is the fifth, who is both firm and correct; how could he be overcome by force? Therefore, out of dread, he lies hidden. Even after three years he does not rise; how could he ever act in the end?

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling at the juncture of Fellowship with Men, treading the extreme of the lower trigram, he cannot magnanimously embrace upper and lower to achieve Great Fellowship.

When factions separate, wishing to deviate from the Way, covetous of what he is adjacent to, he usurps the correspondence of the upper line.

His opponent is firm and strong, beyond his power to confront; hence he 'hides weapons in the thickets,' not daring to mount an open challenge. 'Ascending high mounds,' he gazes ahead, not daring to advance; weighing this balance of forces, for three years he cannot rise.

If for three years he cannot rise, the Way of the fifth is fully established; whither could he go?

Zhouyi ZhuSmall Image

An is an exclamatory particle (meaning 'how').

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

"Nine in the Third Place: Hiding weapons in the thickets" to "for three years he does not rise."

— Correct Meaning: As for "hiding weapons in the thickets," Nine in the Third Place dwells at the extreme of the lower trigram, unable to magnanimously embrace upper and lower to achieve Great Fellowship; it wishes to seize Six in the Second Place below and contend with Nine in the Fifth Place above.

But Nine in the Fifth Place is firm and strong, and Nine in the Third Place lacks the strength to rival it; hence it conceals soldiers and weapons in the thickets and ascends high mounds.

As for "for three years he does not rise," he merely ascends the high mounds to survey the enemy ahead; weighing this situation, even after three years have passed, he still cannot arise. — Commentary: "Unable to magnanimously embrace upper and lower" to "whither could he go?"

— Correct Meaning: As for "unable to magnanimously embrace upper and lower to achieve Great Fellowship," Nine at the Beginning goes out the gate to harmonize with all, free of clinging attachments, which is magnanimously embracing upper and lower to achieve Great Fellowship.

Now Nine in the Third Place wishes to seize Six in the Second Place below and snatch the correspondence of the line above, which is being unable to embrace magnanimously.

"Factions separate" means that in the time of Fellowship with Men, beings have their respective factions and kinds that distinguish them: the second is intimate with the fifth, and separate from the third.

"Wishing to deviate from the Way, covetous of what he is adjacent to, usurping the correspondence of the upper line" means this Nine in the Third Place wishes to deviate from the Way of Fellowship with Men, not following according to kind; oblivious to the second following the fifth, simply out of blind greed, being adjacent to the second he wishes to take her, usurping what corresponds to Nine in the Fifth Place above.

Correct Meaning: "Hiding weapons in the thickets, the enemy being firm" explains the meaning of "hiding weapons in the thickets." Facing the firmness of Nine in the Fifth Place, he dares not openly resist; hence he "hides weapons in the thickets."

As for "for three years he does not rise: how could he act?", this explains the meaning of "for three years he does not rise": even after three years, he still cannot arise. An is a particle, equivalent to saying "how."

Since for three years he cannot rise, the Way of the fifth is already accomplished; how could he act? Hence it says: "How could he act?" This borrows external imagery to illuminate human affairs.
