13. Fellowship with Men (同人)

Line 2

If this line changes it transforms into 1. The Creative (Heaven) (乾)

Modern reading

Line 2 highlights the risk of restricting fellowship exclusively to one's own clan or private circle, bringing regret and limitation. While centrally positioned, excessive clannishness violates the broad spirit of universal communion.

I Ching casting

Six in the second position is the sole Yin line of the hexagram, centrally placed and in legitimate correspondence with Nine in the fifth, yet tempted to confine its bonds to personal kin.

Changing into Hexagram 1 warns that without broad, creative vigor, cozy insularity inevitably causes humiliation. Confining your loyalty to a comfortable private faction narrows your horizon and leads to regret.

Career

Favoritism, nepotism, or leaning entirely on an insular inner circle will provoke resentment and alienate capable teammates across the organization.

The classical tradition describes the path of factionalism as inherently stingy, reminding decision-makers that equitable distribution is vital. Opening opportunities to the wider collective ensures morale remains high and projects move forward smoothly.

Love & relationships

Close partnerships may suffer from insularity, excessive domestic isolation, or overreliance on exclusive social backgrounds that stifle individual growth. When a couple walls itself off from outside relationships, emotional suffocation and mutual dependency often follow.

Allowing fresh social perspectives and shared community experiences into your relationship keeps your bond vibrant and healthy.

Wealth

Relying on privileged tips from close acquaintances or restricting capital ventures to closed, unvetted circles creates hidden vulnerabilities. Nepotistic financial arrangements frequently blur accountability and prevent clear-eyed assessment of real market risks.

Broadening your informational sources and insisting on formal scrutiny protects you from the pitfalls of blind loyalty.

‘(The representative of) the union of men appears in relation with his kindred:’—that is the path to regret.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Zōng means clan. Although Six in the Second Place is central and correct, having correspondence above, it cannot achieve Great Fellowship, but is tied to the private; this is the way of distress. Hence its image and divination are like this.

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

Mǎng is read like mò and dàng. Firm without being central, lacking a proper correspondence above, it wishes to unite with the second line, which is not correct; fearing attack from Nine in the Fifth Place, it presents this image.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The second and the fifth are proper correlates, hence it is said 'fellowship with men in the clan.' Clan means kin and faction.

Harmonizing only with what one is bound and corresponds to shows partial alignment; in the way of Fellowship with Men, this is narrow and selfish, hence distressing.

If the second were a yang line, it would possess the virtue of firm centrality, harmonizing through the central Way without being selfish.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

In other hexagrams, responding through centrality and correctness is considered good; but in Fellowship with Men, it is distressing.

Thus the fifth does not take the meaning of a ruler, for private association is not the way of a sovereign; harmonizing out of private interest is cause for distress.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Its correspondence lies with the fifth; it associates solely with its master, and beyond that master it refuses to unite. Its mind is narrow and biased; this is the way of distress.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Correct Meaning: Bound in correspondence to the fifth, it harmonizes with men only within its own clan; unable to be broad and expansive, this is the way of distress; hence the Xiang says 'the way of distress.'

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six in the Second Place, second line, supreme auspiciousness: Hearts in harmony, affairs in harmony; good work can be done outside the gate; mutual endeavors bring a successful end.
