I Ching casting

Line 1 sits at the base of the receptive earth trigram, mirroring the imagery of pulled reed roots found in Hexagram 11, yet here directing its collective solidarity toward defensive integrity.

Transforming into Hexagram 25, Innocence, it emphasizes acting without selfish contrivance when navigating an unpromising environment. The classical text affirms that persevering in correctness brings auspicious fulfillment because intention remains loyal to higher standards.

Align with principled peers and hold your ground rather than chasing dubious shortcuts.

Career

Early symptoms of systemic decline or institutional disarray are surfacing in your professional surroundings, making isolated heroics inadvisable.

Associating with conscientious colleagues who share your ethical standards creates a protective buffer against questionable workplace trends. Classical commentary highlights that maintaining quiet fidelity to excellence preserves professional reputation intact.

Stand united with trusted teammates and decline involvement in compromised initiatives.

Love & relationships

External pressures and misunderstandings may begin to test the emotional resilience of your relationship as outside influences turn critical. Weathering this initial wave of friction requires that both partners stay grounded in mutual loyalty and straightforward honesty.

Avoiding knee-jerk accusations allows you to face environmental stress as a unified front. Rely on shared commitments and honest communication to keep outside complications from disrupting your bond.

Wealth

Subtle signals indicate tightening economic conditions, suggesting that speculative strategies from earlier periods are becoming unviable.

Partnering with trustworthy, conservative associates and avoiding non-traditional schemes preserves financial stability during early downturns. The classical reading advises clean motives and strict adherence to established financial ethics.

Protect your assets by sticking to transparent dealings and resisting speculative temptations.

Line statement

1. The first line, divided, suggests the idea of grass pulled up, and bringing with it other stalks with whose roots it is connected. With firm correctness (on the part of its subject), there will be good fortune and progress.

Small Image

‘The good fortune through firm goodness, (suggested by) the pulling up of the grass,’ arises from the will (of the parties intended) being bent on (serving) the ruler.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

The three yin lines are below, at a time of Standstill (Stagnation); this is the image of small men advancing in linked succession, yet the evil of the first line has not yet taken shape. Therefore, it cautions that maintaining correctness will bring good fortune and success.

If one can act thus, one will transform into a superior man.

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

If a small man transforms into a superior man, he will be able to make love for his ruler his primary thought, without calculating his own private interest.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Both Peace and Standstill (Stagnation) take cogon grass as an image because the hosts of yang and hosts of yin are together below, presenting the image of being entangled by their roots.

In the time of Peace, advancing together brings good fortune; in the time of Standstill, maintaining correctness together brings success.

At first, Standstill took the meaning of small men within and superior men without; here again it takes Six at the Beginning, being obstructed and below, as the way of the superior man.

The Changes draws its meaning according to the times, shifting and transforming without constancy. In a time of Standstill, the one dwelling below is a superior man.

Each of the three yin lines of Standstill has a correspondence above, but in a time of obstruction and separation, they are severed and do not communicate; thus there is no functional correspondence.

If Six at the Beginning can maintain firmness of virtue along with its kind, this is the good fortune of dwelling in Standstill and the success of its way.

Those who can advance in a time of Standstill are small men; the superior man merely extends his principles and avoids disaster. When the superior man advances or retreats, he never fails to act in concert with his kind.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The line text uses the six guarding itself below to clarify the superior man's way of dwelling in lowliness; the Xiang commentary further illuminates this to depict the superior man's heart.

The superior man firmly guards his integrity to dwell below, not because he delights in not advancing and merely perfecting himself alone, but because his way is currently obstructed and he cannot advance, so he rests content with it.

His heart has never ceased to be concerned with the world; his will is constantly set on gaining the ruler's trust and advancing to restore and succor the realm. Hence it says: 'His will is on the ruler.'

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling at the beginning of Standstill (Stagnation), it marks the inception of compliance and is the head of its kind. Compliance is not strength; how could it march forth?

In a time of Standstill, to act is to enter depravity; the three yin lines share the same path, and none should advance. Therefore, pulling up cogon grass along with its kind, being correct and not flattering, brings good fortune and success.

Zhouyi ZhuSmall Image

His will is set on the ruler, therefore he does not advance carelessly.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Correct Meaning: As for "pulling up cogon grass," dwelling at the beginning of Standstill and at the inception of compliance, one should not yet move; to move would be to fall into depravity, so one does not dare advance.

This is true for all three yin lines, just like pulling up cogon grass where the roots are entangled and drawn along together. If oneself does not advance, the others all follow; hence it says "pulling up cogon grass."

As for "along with its kind," it means its peers all do likewise. As for "correctness brings good fortune and success," dwelling in uprightness with one's will set on the ruler brings good fortune and open success.

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Correct Meaning: "His will is on the ruler" explains the meaning of "pulling up cogon grass; correctness brings good fortune."

The reason he dwells in uprightness is that his will is set on the ruler, not daring to harbor flattery and advance heedlessly; hence he attains "good fortune and success." This uses external things to illuminate human affairs.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six at the Beginning, initial line, upper-medium: Leading and drawing each other along, diligent joy arises naturally. In every undertaking nothing is unfavorable; sorrowful matters turn into joyful reunion.
