I Ching casting

Line 2 is central and correct within the lower trigram, holding a proper relationship with the ruler at line 5, yet constrained by prevailing stagnation.

Its transition to Hexagram 6, Conflict, reflects the internal tension between yielding to worldly pressure and maintaining inner righteousness.

Traditional commentary observes that lesser minds may flatter for quick rewards, but the wise person accepts standstill to keep from compromising their peer group. Resist the urge to curry favor and let your integrity speak for itself.

Career

Workplace currents may reward flattery or superficial compliance, presenting an easy path to short-term recognition at the cost of personal standards. Yielding to questionable practices may secure fleeting convenience, but it undermines your long-term professional standing.

The classical teaching honors those who endure temporary professional obscurity rather than compromise their standards. Remain steadfast in your professional ethics and let temporary accolades pass by unheeded.

Love & relationships

A tendency may arise to appease a partner's unreasonable demands or suppress your genuine needs simply to preserve an illusion of peace. An authentic union cannot flourish when one party surrenders dignity to maintain superficial harmony.

Traditional insight suggests that enduring temporary awkwardness is preferable to enabling unhealthy relational patterns. Honor your authentic boundaries and let mutual respect guide the relationship.

Wealth

Opportunities offering quick financial returns through gray areas or unethical shortcuts may present themselves during this phase. While opportunistic actors might profit momentarily, the legal and reputational liabilities far outweigh any fleeting windfall.

Choosing disciplined compliance over dubious gains ensures lasting financial security and peace of mind. Decline easy profits tied to ethical compromises and safeguard your financial integrity.

Line statement

2. The second line, divided, shows its subject patient and obedient. To the small man (comporting himself so) there will be good fortune. If the great man (comport himself) as the distress and obstruction require, he will have success.

Small Image

‘The great man, comporting himself as the distress and obstruction require, will have success:—‘he does not allow himself to be disordered by the herd (of small men).

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Yin, yielding, central, and correct, this is the image of a small man who can tolerate and compliantly serve the superior man; it is the path of good fortune for a small man.

Therefore, in divination, if a small man acts like this, it is auspicious; but the great man must peacefully abide in his standstill, after which his way will prosper. One must not lose one's own integrity merely because the other embraces and serves oneself.

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

It means not falling into confusion among the flock of small men.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

In its nature Six in the Second Place is yin and yielding; in its dwelling it is central and correct.

Speaking from the perspective of an yin, yielding small man, when obstructed below, what his heart harbors is to compliantly serve those above in order to seek deliverance from standstill for his own benefit—this is the small man's good fortune.

When the great man encounters standstill, he conducts himself according to the Way; how could he warp himself and compromise the Way to compliantly serve those above? He merely preserves his own integrity in standstill.

The standstill of his person is precisely the success of his Way. Someone might ask: If upper and lower do not interact, whom does he serve? I answer: When Standstill is in effect, the small man's intent to serve those above is never absent.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

In a time of standstill, the great man preserves his upright integrity and does not mingle in confusion with the flock of small men. Though his person meets obstruction, his Way prospers; hence it is called 'Standstill brings success.'

If one's person prospers without the Way, that is the standstill of the Way. It does not say 'superior man' but 'great man,' for only if one can do this is one's way truly great.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling in an age of Standstill (Stagnation) yet obtaining its proper position, using utmost compliance to embrace and serve those above, the path of the small man is opened; yielding within and firm without, if the great man stands firm in standstill against it, his Way will then achieve success.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Correct Meaning: As for "embracing and serving," dwelling in an age of Standstill yet obtaining its proper position, using its compliant will, it embraces and serves those above.

As for "the small man has good fortune," in a time of closure and obstruction, the path of the small man is open; hence for the small man it is good fortune.

As for "the great man's standstill brings success," if the great man uses this virtue of embracing and serving, and is able to obstruct the "good fortune" of the small man, his Way will then achieve success.

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Correct Meaning: This explains why "the great man's standstill brings success": it is truly because he obstructs the small man, guarding against him in accordance with the Way; though small men are numerous, they dare not throw the multitude into confusion.

Hence it says "does not throw the flock into disorder."
