I Ching casting

Occupying the top of the inner trigram without a receptive counterpart in the upper realm, this strong line feels physically halted and unseated.

The Xiaoxiang commentary notes that while progress feels halting, restraint preserves the subject from becoming entangled in dangerous alliances. Pausing when the path is blocked prevents reckless mistakes.

Career

Attempting to claim responsibility for a high-profile initiative when key resources are controlled by others will only yield friction. The classical perspective views forced advancement under blocked conditions as an invitation to political vulnerability.

Stepping back from contested turf preserves your standing for clearer opportunities.

Love & relationships

Pursuing someone who remains guarded or socially unavailable leads to mutual awkwardness and diminished dignity. Classical commentary cautions against forcing intimacy where natural resonance is absent.

Stepping back with dignity preserves self-respect and spares you unnecessary distress.

Wealth

Rushing into speculative ventures where entry barriers are high and insider competition is fierce carries elevated risk of entrapment. Traditional analysis suggests that friction at the gates serves as a helpful warning to stay liquid and patient.

Declining to chase crowded or obstructive deals safeguards your principal.

Line statement

3. The third line, undivided, shows one from whose buttocks the skin has been stripped so that he walks with difficulty. The position is perilous, but there will be no great error.

‘He walks with difficulty:’—but his steps have not yet been drawn (into the course of the first line).

Classical commentary

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The second line and the initial line have already met; the third line takes pleasure in the initial line and is intimately close to the second, which is not a secure place.

It is also resented and disliked by the second line, so its dwelling finds no peace, like buttocks without skin.

Finding no peace in dwelling, it ought to leave; yet dwelling in the time of Coming to Meet, its aspiration seeks an encounter, and the single yin below is what it desires. Thus, though its dwelling finds no peace, its walking is halting.

Halting describes the difficulty of advancing, meaning it cannot bring itself to abandon it immediately.

However, the third line is firm, correct, and placed in Xun, possessing the quality of not remaining deluded to the end; if it recognizes the impropriety, harbors caution and fear, and dares not act rashly, it can avoid great blame.

Seeking an encounter unrighteously already incurs blame; knowing the danger and stopping keeps it from becoming great.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

At first, its aspiration was set on seeking an encounter with the initial line, so its walking was slow and untethered, not hastening its pace. Having recognized the danger and reformed itself, it does not arrive at great blame.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling at the extreme of the lower trigram while the second line occupies the initial line, it is not something it can ride upon; its dwelling finds no peace, and its movement seeks to respond to it, yet it cannot tether and hold it to secure its place; therefore it is said, 'the buttocks are flayed, his walking is halting.'

However, treading in its proper position, its station is not wrongful; it merely fails to meet its proper time, which causes peril. Since the disaster was not brought on by itself, 'there is no great blame.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Sub-commentary: What yang relies upon is yin.

Nine in the Third Place dwells atop the lower trigram as the master of the inner trigram; riding above the second line, it has no yin to rely on, so its dwelling finds no peace; above, it has no correspondence, unable to tether and hold anything to secure its position, identical to Nine in the Fourth Place of Hexagram Breakthrough losing its ground; hence 'the buttocks are flayed, his walking is halting.'

However, it attains its proper position, not being in a wrongful place; it is purely due to not meeting its proper time that it incurs this peril. The disaster was not invited by itself, so there is no great blame; therefore it is said, 'peril, but no great blame.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Sub-commentary: 'Walking is not yet drawn' means that it has not been able to tether and hold, so 'its walking is halting'; this is 'walking is not yet drawn.'
