44. Coming to Meet (姤)

Line 6

If this line changes it transforms into 28. Preponderance of the Great (大过)

Modern reading

Standing at the peak of Hexagram 44, the top yang line represents an extreme, unyielding stance that risks isolation from others. The transformed hexagram Daguo indicates that softening rigid defenses and choosing graceful restraint helps prevent regret from escalating into serious fault.

I Ching casting

Occupying the highest rank without receptive support from below, this line evokes the image of meeting others with rigid horns.

Classical readings note through the Xiaoxiang commentary that reaching the absolute top brings distress and regret because inflexibility shuts down genuine connection. Releasing stubborn pride and adopting an approachable posture defuses unnecessary friction.

Career

Insisting strictly on hierarchical dominance or uncompromising standards can isolate you from colleagues and subordinates. The traditional analysis cautions against pushing aggressive initiatives when sitting at the edge of organizational influence.

Taking a step back to listen to differing perspectives preserves collaboration and avoids professional impasse.

Love & relationships

Emotional partnerships suffer when one partner adopts an unbending, defensive attitude that keeps emotional warmth at bay. The classical symbolism of encountering with horns highlights how pride can create an artificial divide even when affection exists.

Softening your tone and offering simple empathy will melt the current chill.

Wealth

Financial momentum slows when decisions are dominated by stubborn insistence on unviable terms or rigid negotiation tactics. Structural indications suggest that pressing for total dominance risks locking up capital or fracturing promising joint ventures.

Prioritizing liquidity and conceding non-essential points keeps resources safe and workable.

Line statement

6. The sixth line, undivided, shows its subject receiving others on his horns. There will be occasion for regret, but there will be no error.

Small Image

‘He receives others on his horns:’—he is exhausted at his greatest height, and there will be cause for regret.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

The horn is that which is firm and rigid at the very top. Nine at the Top, with firmness, dwells at the top and lacks an official position, unable to find an encounter; therefore its image and divination are similar to Nine in the Third Place.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

That which is utmost in firmness and resides at the uppermost position is the horn. Because the ninth line, with firmness, resides at the top, it takes the horn as its image.

When people meet, it arises from condescending to follow one another, and joining through harmony and compliance; thus they can unite. Nine at the Top is lofty, aloof, and extremely rigid; who will join with it? Seeking an encounter through this is certainly humiliating.

Oneself is like this, so that people keep distant from oneself is not the fault of others. It is brought about by oneself, so there is nowhere to lay the blame.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Having already reached the extremity of the top, its firmness is also at its peak; this is reaching the upper limit and incurring humiliation. Dwelling on high with extreme firmness and seeking an encounter—is that not difficult indeed?

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Advancing to the ultimate extreme, there is nothing further to meet, only meeting its own horns; hence it says, "Coming to meet at its horns."

Advancing without an encounter, one simply regrets in solitude; not contending with external things, its way does not cause harm, hence there is no misfortune or blame.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Sub-commentary states: As for "coming to meet at its horns," the horns reside at the very top of the body. Nine at the Top advances to the extreme and has nothing further to meet, only meeting its horns; hence it says, "Coming to meet at its horns."

As for "distress, yet no blame," the horns are not a place of peaceful rest, equivalent to having no encounter; hence it regrets in solitude and feels humiliation.

Yet it does not contend with things, and its way causes no harm; therefore there is no misfortune or fault, hence it says "no blame."

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

The Sub-commentary states: As for "the upper limit brings distress," dwelling at the exhausted top is why it meets its horns and incurs distress.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Nine at the Top, sixth line, Lower-Lower: Whether seen or unseen, beware of people behind your back. Whether you meet or do not meet, in the end there is no reliance.
