Bao means to encompass and tolerate. The second line lives in an age of folly, possessing firm and enlightened talent, while responding to the ruler Six in the Fifth Place and sharing the same virtue of the mean; it bears the responsibility of the time.
It must broaden its tolerance and take pity on the dim and foolish; only then can it enlighten the world's folly and achieve the merit of governing ignorance. Its Dao is vast and its application wide; acting like this brings good fortune.
In the entire Gua there are only two yang lines: Nine at the Top is excessively firm, and only Nine in the Second Place possesses the virtue of firm balance and responds to the fifth, being uniquely enlightened for service to the times.
If it relies haughtily on its own brilliance and acts entirely on its own authority, its virtue will not be broad. Thus, even with the yielding darkness of women, one must still accept what is good in them; then one's enlightenment becomes comprehensive.
Moreover, because all the other lines are yin, it speaks of 'a wife.' Even with the sagehood of Yao and Shun, unequaled under heaven, it was still said that they 'consulted the common folk below' and adopted the good of others.
If the second can embrace and receive, it can successfully carry out the affairs of its ruler, just as a son can manage his household. Since the fifth is yin and yielding, the merit of dispelling folly rests entirely with the second.
Speaking in terms of a family, the fifth is the father and the second is the son; that the second can take charge of dispelling folly is like a son being able to manage his household.
