Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Dwelling on the outer edge of the Gua with firm Yang, it has no ties or correspondences below; this is a retreat that is distant and a dwelling that is abundant and free. Hence its image and divination are like this.

'Fat' conveys the idea of spacious ease, abundance, and self-contentment.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

'Fat' carries the meaning of fullness, greatness, and spacious ease. For one who retreats, only drifting away into the far distance without lingering ties is supreme.

Top Nine is of the Qian body, firm and decisive, dwelling outside the Gua; furthermore, it has no attachments below. This is retreating far without entanglement, which may be called roomy and abundant with ease.

The time of retreat is one of exhaustion and difficulty; if handled well, it becomes 'fat' and abundant. When one's retreat is like this, what would not be advantageous?

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Its retreat is so distant that there is no hesitation or blockage. Being on the outside, it is already far away; having no correspondence, it has no burdens; hence it is firmly decisive without doubt.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling at the utmost exterior, it has no correspondence within; transcendent and severing worldly ties, the mind has no doubtful backward glances. Sorrow and hardship cannot burden it, and the fowler's arrow-cord cannot reach it.

Therefore, 'a bountiful retreat: everything is advantageous.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

'Top Nine, a bountiful retreat: everything is advantageous.' The Correct Meaning says: Master Zixia's Commentary states: 'Fat means abundant and rich.'

Although the fourth and fifth lines are on the outside, both have correspondences within and still harbor a mind of looking back.

Only Top Nine dwells at the utmost outer limit, with no correspondence within and no doubtful backward glance in mind; this is the most superior form of retreat, hence called 'a bountiful retreat.'

Having achieved an abundant retreat, nothing is not advantageous, hence it says 'everything is advantageous.' Regarding the note 'Dwelling at the utmost exterior' to 'everything is advantageous': The Correct Meaning says: Zēng is the name of an arrow.

Zheng Xuan's commentary on the Rites of Zhou says: 'Tying a cord to an arrow is called zēng.' Regarding jiǎo, the Zi Lin and Shuowen Jiezi state: 'Jiǎo is a raw silk cord.'

Yicuo JinLine statement

Top Nine, sixth line, uppermost fortune: Each season of peach and plum blossoms brings fresh renewal; who recognizes the bright atmosphere of the warm Yang? Beneath the woods and beside the waters, livelihoods abound; gazing upon the distinct mountains, all suits the human heart.
