I Ching casting

This yin line is both central and correct, maintaining an aligned correspondence with the ruler in the fifth position. The Xiang commentary interprets binding with yellow ox hide as a symbol of fortifying one's internal will against external chaos.

In short, anchoring yourself to your core values provides the firmest defense when the surrounding environment begins to waver.

Career

Amid organizational restructuring or shifting tides, sticking to trusted mentors and foundational professional ethics protects your standing. Refusing to be lured away by superficial perks allows you to preserve credibility and long-term utility.

In short, stay aligned with reliable leadership and your core competencies; external noise will not knock you off course if your standards are clear.

Love & relationships

A sense of deep loyalty and mutual commitment characterizes this position, where shared trust withstands outside pressures. The mutual connection between line two and line five reflects partners who stand together with steady devotion through uncertain times.

In short, standing firmly by each other through shared challenges creates a bond that outside stress cannot easily break.

Wealth

Financial stability relies on patient defensive planning and adhering strictly to established contractual agreements and budgets. Resisting speculative trends in favor of secure, well-understood vehicles protects principal capital from erosion.

In short, lock in your financial discipline and rely on conservative reserves rather than chasing untested promises.

Line statement

2. The second line, divided, shows its subject holding (his purpose) fast as if by a (thong made from the) hide of a yellow ox, which cannot be broken.

Small Image

‘He holds it as; by (a thong from the hide of) a yellow ox:’—his purpose is firm.

Classical commentary

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The second and fifth lines form a proper correspondence. Even in a time of divergence and retreat, the second responds obediently to the fifth through centrality and correctness, while the fifth bonds intimately with the second through centrality and correctness.

Their communion is naturally firm. Yellow is the color of the center; an ox is an obedient creature; hide is a tough and firm material.

As the second and fifth interact in accordance with centrality, correctness, and compliant Dao, their bond is as secure as if tied fast with yellow ox hide. 'None can untie it' means that the firmness of their bond cannot be fully expressed in words.

Because it is a time of retreat, it is stated in the most superlative terms. The Xiang Commentary says: 'Bound with the hide of a yellow ox' means holding firm the will.

Above and below bind one another through the Dao of centrality and compliance; their wills are exceedingly steadfast, as if fastened with the hide of an ox.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling within and holding the center, it acts as the host of the retreat. When all things have already retreated, how can one hold them fast? If one can hold to the Dao of balanced principle and profound compliance to bind them, then none can untie it.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Correct Meaning says: Regarding 'bound with the hide of a yellow ox, none can untie it,' in an age of retreat and withdrawal, one flees from within to the outside. Since Six in the Second Place dwells in the center and abides within, it is not one who retreats.

Not being one who retreats, it becomes the master from whom others retreat. When all things abandon oneself and retreat, how can one hold and detain them? Only through the Dao of central harmony and profound compliance can one stabilize and secure them.

If one can employ this Dao, they cannot overcome oneself to untie the bond and depart. Yellow is the color of the center, symbolizing central harmony. The nature of an ox is yielding and compliant, and its hide is thick and tough; ox hide thus symbolizes profound compliance.

Six in the Second Place (Six in the Third Place here in error for Six in the Second Place) dwells in the center and attains its proper position, which also means it can employ the Dao of central harmony and profound compliance; therefore it is said, 'bound with the hide of a yellow ox, none can untie it.'

The Correct Meaning says: 'Holding firm the will' means making steadfast the will of those who retreat, so that they do not depart from oneself.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six in the Second Place, middle of middle fortune: Striving amid the weary dust, one still awaits the proper time; deep within the quiet window, who knows of one's worth?

If one meets a noble in blue and purple robes who offers guidance, wealth, profit, fame, and merit may naturally be anticipated.
