Classical commentary

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

When splitting reaches the sovereign position, Splitting Apart is at its extreme, and its misfortune is obvious. Therefore, it no longer speaks of splitting, but establishes another meaning to open the gate for petty men to turn toward goodness.

The fifth line is the master of the host of yin; fish are yin creatures, hence taken as the image.

If the fifth can cause the host of yin to follow in order like a string of fish, turning to win the favor and love of the yang line above, just like palace ladies, then there will be nothing that does not further.

Palace ladies are the women of the palace, wives, concubines, and attendants; being yin, they take the meaning of receiving favor. Because a single yang is above, the host of yin has the way of yielding obedience; hence this meaning is brought forth.

'The Image says: Through the favor granted to palace ladies, in the end there is no blame.'

When the multitude of yin strips away yang to the extreme, if Six in the Fifth Place can lead the host of yin head-to-tail in orderly sequence, turning to win favor from yang, then in the end there will be no fault or blame.

Near the end of Splitting Apart, the Sage sets forth this meaning once more, showing the utmost depth and earnestness in encouraging people to turn toward goodness.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling in the time of Splitting Apart and occupying the honored position, it is the master of Splitting Apart. The harm of Splitting Apart lies in petty men gaining favor to erode the noble person.

If one can bestow favor upon petty men only as one does upon palace women, without harming rectitude, then though those favored are many, in the end there will be no blame.

'A string of fish' refers to this multitude of yin, placed head-to-tail in succession, resembling a string of fish.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Proper Meaning states: 'A string of fish brings favor through palace ladies'—occupying the honored position, it is 'the master of Splitting Apart'; the harm of Splitting Apart is that petty men gain favor to erode noble persons.

'A string of fish' refers to the host of yin, lined up head-to-tail in order like fish strung on a cord.

If Six in the Fifth Place treats the host of yin just like the favor shown to palace ladies—where palace ladies receive favor without harming righteous affairs—then in the end there will be no fault, and nothing that does not further; hence it says 'nothing that does not further.'

Thus the Image says, 'in the end there is no blame.'

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six in the Fifth Place, fifth line, middle-middle: Full then waning, waning then full; with low, close, and delicate care one must navigate; only when the time arrives will affinity appear.
