Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

In the age of Possession in Great Measure, being yielding, compliant, and central while occupying the honored position, she empties herself to respond to the worth of Nine in the Second Place, and those above and below turn to her in allegiance; this is the mutual exchange of sincere confidence.

Yet the way of a ruler prizes firmness; excessive yielding leads to neglect of duty, so one must temper it with dignity to attain good fortune. Hence such are the image and the divination, which also serve as words of admonition.

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

The sincere confidence of one person is sufficient to connect the will of those above and below. Yi has the fanqie yi-shi. If one is overly yielding, people will treat one lightly and lack a heart of fearful vigilance.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Six in the Fifth Place, in the time of Possession in Great Measure, occupies the sovereign's throne with an open center, which is the image of sincere confidence.

When a ruler upholds yielding, maintains the center, and receives subordinates with sincere confidence, subordinates will likewise exhaust their trust and sincerity to serve the superior; thus sincere confidence is exchanged between above and below.

Dwelling in the honored position with a yielding nature during the time of Possession in Great Measure, people's minds are relaxed and easeful; if one exclusively values yielding and compliance, insolence and disrespect will arise.

Therefore, there must be awe-inspiring dignity to attain good fortune. Dignity refers to having an imposing majesty.

Having both received subordinates with gentle sincerity, winning willing allegiance, and possessed majesty that commands reverence, one excels at managing great possession. The good fortune can well be known.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The will of subordinates follows the superior. When the superior receives subordinates with sincere confidence, subordinates likewise serve the superior with truthfulness and faith.

Thus 'his confidence is mutually exchanged' arises because the superior possesses sincere confidence that awakens the faithful will of subordinates; subordinates following the superior is like an echo answering a sound.

The reason majesty brings good fortune is that without awe-inspiring dignity, subordinates will grow lax and lack vigilance, meaning they will lack reverence and preparation for the superior's requirements and reproaches.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

The sovereign is honored through yielding, occupies greatness through centrality, has no selfish bias toward things, and above and below respond to her. Sincerity awakens the will, hence 'his confidence is mutually exchanged.'

Indeed, when one shows no selfish bias toward things, things respond with impartiality. When one doubts not things, things respond with sincerity. Being both impartial and truthful, what difficulty or need for defense remains?

Instruction prevails without words; how could there not be awe-inspiring dignity? If one acts as the lord of Possession in Great Measure without following this path, can good fortune be attained?

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Sub-commentary says: 'Six in the Fifth Place: his confidence is mutually exchanged': jue means his; fu means confidence and sincerity; jiao means exchange and encounter; ru is a grammatical particle.

Six in the Fifth Place dwells in honor through yielding, occupies greatness through centrality, has no selfish bias toward things, and above and below respond to her; hence her sincere confidence draws things to connect with her, so it says 'his confidence is mutually exchanged.'

'Dignity brings good fortune': wei means awe and reverence. Being truthful and sincere, teaching prevails without speaking; wherever she acts, people revere and respect her, hence it says 'dignity.' By employing this way, good fortune is attained.

The Sub-commentary says: 'Confidence awakens the will' explains the meaning of 'his confidence is mutually exchanged.' Because one's own sincerity inspires their resolve, above and below respond and interact with her.

'The good fortune of dignity comes from ease without defenses' explains the meaning of 'the good fortune of dignity.'

The reason dignity attains good fortune is that, having no selfish bias toward things, one acts with simplicity and ease without needing defenses, and things naturally revere one; hence it says 'ease without defenses.'
