Upright meaning

A gardener leans on his hoe, studying seven pentacles on the vine. The Seven of Pentacles is the pause between planting and harvest: effort invested, growth underground, nothing yet to pick. This card favors patience as strategy, tending rather than digging up roots to check them, and the honest assessment the gardener performs, is this vine worth another season? Distinguish harvest-lag from barren soil; the first asks endurance, the second asks a change of crop. Your part is unglamorous, water, weeding, showing up. Value is accumulating in the one currency that cannot be rushed. Rest on the hoe without shame.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the hoe bites impatiently. The wait erodes faith, every unsprouting day whispers wasted, and the gardener starts excavating seedlings to see if they are real. This position names the anxiety of deferred returns, the project, degree, investment, relationship, whose payoff refuses to announce itself. First audit soberly: is the delay maturation or evidence, a pause, or a pattern. Waite's caution about money lent belongs here, resources parked where worry follows them. If the vine is sound, stop measuring weekly and set review dates instead. Gardens do not hurry for pacing farmers.

Classical excerpt — The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), Part III §2
Divinatory Meanings: These are exceedingly contradictory; in the main, it is a card of money, business, barter; but one reading gives altercation, quarrel—and another innocence, ingenuity, purgation. Reversed: Cause for anxiety regarding money which it may be proposed to lend.
