Upright meaning

Justice holds the scales level, and Waite's reading is equity, rightness, and probity, the triumph of the deserving side. Upright, this card appears when a situation wants to be weighed honestly: a decision with real consequences, a conflict that needs a fair hearing, an account somewhere in your life that has gone unreconciled. It favors clarity over comfort: stating the truth of a thing plainly, including your own part in it. If you have been waiting on a verdict from a boss, a process, an institution, or simply from yourself, this card leans toward an outcome earned rather than engineered. It also invites a personal audit: where do your actions and your stated values diverge, even in small ways? Justice restores balance not as punishment but as alignment, what is owed gets acknowledged, what was hidden gets named, what was earned gets credited. Approach your dealings now with scrupulous honesty, and expect the same standard to be applied to you. The scales are honest, which is ultimately the good news.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, Justice tips: something in the situation is not being weighed fairly, and the imbalance may be yours to own or yours to name. Common shapes include bias dressed as objectivity, rules applied selectively, avoiding an accountability that keeps knocking, or a story you tell yourself in which your contribution to the problem is somehow always off-stage. This card asks for the uncomfortable inventory: whose voice is missing from your account of events, and what would the other side's version sound like told fairly? If you are genuinely being treated unfairly, the reversal is a prompt to document, to seek counsel, and to speak up through proper channels rather than absorb it. But test your own scales first; self-deception is the quiet specialty of this position. Legal, bureaucratic, or contractual matters under this card benefit from extra care and honest advice. Fairness begins inconveniently, with the truth told to yourself before it is demanded of anyone else.

Classical excerpt — The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), Part I
Court de Gebelin attempted to solve the difficulty by a tour de force , and believed that he had extracted what he wanted from the symbol of the Hanged Man—wherein he deceived himself. The Tarot has, therefore, its Justice, its Temperance also and its Fortitude, but—owing to a curious omission—it does not offer us any type of Prudence, though it may be admitted that, in some respects, the isolation of the Hermit, pursuing a solitary path by the light of his own lamp, gives, to those who can receive it, a certain high counsel in respect of the via prudentiæ .
