Upright meaning

The Hermit carries his own light up the mountain, and Waite's deeper note is striking: this is a card of attainment rather than mere searching. Upright, it invites a deliberate step back, not from life but to see it whole. Something in your situation needs the quiet that only distance provides: a decision too important for the noise of other people's opinions, a grief or question that needs walking with, a next chapter that will not reveal itself in a crowded room. This is favorable time for retreat in the healthy sense: journaling, a solo trip, a sabbath from the feeds, study pursued for its own sake. The Hermit does not ask you to vanish permanently; he asks you to carry the lantern of your own judgment. When you come back down, and you will, what you bring will be worth the absence: clarity no committee could have given you. The light you are looking for has been in your hand the whole time.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the Hermit's healthy solitude curdles into isolation. The line between retreat and hiding gets thin: declining one more invitation, postponing one more conversation, until the quiet that was meant for reflection becomes a room where nothing moves. Loneliness with a good cover story is the classic signature. This card can also mean losing your way in the opposite direction, so immersed in introspection that every small feeling gets analyzed into a fog, perspective gone missing precisely because the view is too close. Ask honestly what the withdrawal is protecting you from. Sometimes the answer is legitimate exhaustion, in which case, rest properly and without guilt. But if fear of being seen, rejected, or burdened is running the schedule, the card gently knocks. Let one person in, one message, one coffee, one honest sentence about how you are actually doing. Wisdom needs an audience sometimes, even a single hearth, to stay human. Come partway down the mountain; the light travels.

Classical excerpt — The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), Part I
He is said to be in search of that Truth which is located far off in the sequence, and of Justice which has preceded him on the way. But this is a card of attainment, as we shall see later, rather than a card of quest.
