Judgment

Pî indicates that there should be free course (in what it denotes). There will be little advantage (however) if it be allowed to advance (and take the lead).

Tuan commentary

(When it is said that) Pî indicates that there should be free course (in what it denotes):— (We see) the weak line coming and ornamenting the strong lines (of the lower trigram), and hence (it is said that ornament) ‘should have free course.’

On the other hand, the strong line above ornaments the weak ones (of the upper trigram), and hence (it is said) that ‘there will be little advantage, if (ornament) be allowed to advance (and take the lead).’ (This is illustrated in the) appearances that ornament the sky.

Elegance and intelligence (denoted by the lower trigram) regulated by the arrest (denoted by the upper) suggest the observances that adorn human (society). We look at the ornamental figures of the sky, and thereby ascertain the changes of the seasons.

We look at the ornamental observances of society, and understand how the processes of transformation are accomplished all under heaven.

Great Image

(The trigram representing) a mountain and that for fire under it form Pî. The superior man, in accordance with this, throws a brilliancy around his various processes of government, but does not dare (in a similar way) to decide cases of criminal litigation.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiJudgment

Pronunciation: Bi is pronounced bi-wei. Bi means adornment. If the hexagram comes from Decrease, the yielding comes from the third place to adorn the second, and the firm goes up from the second to adorn the third.

If it comes from After Completion, the yielding comes from the top to adorn the fifth, and the firm goes up from the fifth to adorn the top. Furthermore, with Li inside and Gen outside, it has the image of civil brightness while each attains its proper lot; hence it is Bi.

For the diviner, because yielding comes to adorn the firm, yang receives the aid of yin and Li shines brightly within; hence it brings success. Because the firm goes up to adorn the yielding and Gen keeps still outside, it is slightly advantageous to have somewhere to go.

(The character "success" is suspected to be superfluous.)

Zhouyi BenyiTuan commentary

Explaining the hexagram text by hexagram change: the interchange of firm and yielding is a natural phenomenon; hence it is called the patterns of heaven.

Earlier scholars said that above "patterns of heaven," the four characters "firm and yielding intercross" should be present, which may well be reasonable. Also speaking in terms of the hexagram's virtue: stillness means that each attains its proper lot.

This expresses to the utmost the greatness of the dao of Grace.

Zhouyi BenyiGreat Image

Fire beneath the mountain: brightness does not reach far. Clarifying ordinary governance concerns small matters; deciding lawsuits concerns great matters. With Li's brightness within and Gen's stillness without, its image is taken in this way.

Yichuan YizhuanJudgment

Sequence of the Hexagrams for Bi: He means union. Things cannot merely unite heedlessly; hence it is received with Bi. Bi means adornment. When things unite, there must be pattern; pattern is adornment.

Just as when people gather together there are dignified demeanor and hierarchical order, and when things assemble there are rank and sequence: whenever there is union, there must be pattern. This is why Bi follows Biting Through. As a hexagram, it has fire beneath the mountain.

A mountain is where plants, trees, and myriad things gather; when there is fire below, it illuminates what is above, and all kinds of vegetation are bathed in its brilliant luster, which has the image of adornment; hence it is Bi.

Only after things have adornment can they attain success; hence it is said: "Without substance, nothing can be established; without pattern, nothing can proceed." When there is substance and adornment is added, it can attain success.

The dao of cultural adornment can augment its luster, so it can be slightly advantageous in advancing. The Tuan says: Bi brings success.

Yichuan YizhuanTuan commentary

"The patterns of heaven; civil brilliance and stillness are the patterns of humanity." The hexagram represents the image of adornment because the two trigrams, upper and lower, have firm and yielding mutually adorning each other.

The lower trigram was originally The Creative (Heaven); a yielding line came to adorn its center and made it Li. The upper trigram was originally The Receptive (Earth); a firm line went to adorn its top and made it Gen.

Thus there is fire beneath the mountain, resting in civil brilliance to form Bi. Nothing under heaven can proceed without adornment; hence through Grace one can attain success.

"Yielding comes and adorns the firm, hence success": the yielding comes to adorn the firm and forms the image of civil brilliance; civil brilliance is why it is Bi. The dao of Grace can bring success, which truly derives from adornment bringing success.

"Distributing the firm upward to adorn the yielding, hence it is slightly advantageous to have somewhere to go": dividing the middle line of The Creative (Heaven) to go and adorn the top of Gen.

Affairs become more prosperous through adornment and can proceed through adornment; hence it is slightly advantageous to have somewhere to go. Now, that going can be advantageous is because there is substance.

The dao of adornment cannot increase substance itself; it merely adds pattern and color. Affairs become manifest and flourishing through pattern; hence it is slightly advantageous to have somewhere to go. "Success" means unhindered passage; "going" means advancing further.

The transformation of the two trigrams jointly constitutes the meaning of Bi, while the Tuan explains upper and lower separately, each governing one matter, because Li's brightness is sufficient to bring success, and adorning the yielding can also make minor advances.

"The patterns of heaven; civil brilliance and stillness are the patterns of humanity": continuing from the above, this means the mutual patterning of yin and yang, firm and yielding, is the pattern of heaven; resting in civil brilliance is the pattern of humanity.

"Stillness" means abiding in civil brilliance. Substance must have pattern, which is the natural principle. Principle must have polarity, which is the root of endless generation.

Where there is above, there is below; where there is this, there is that; where there is substance, there is pattern. The one cannot stand alone; when there are two, there is pattern. Who but one who knows the Dao could understand this?

The patterns of heaven are the principles of Heaven; the patterns of humanity are the Dao of humankind.

"Contemplating the patterns of heaven to observe the changes of the seasons": The patterns of heaven refer to the constellations of the sun, moon, and stars, and the alternating changes of cold, heat, yin, and yang.

By contemplating their movements, one observes the transition of the four seasons. "Contemplating the patterns of humanity to transform and complete all under heaven": The patterns of humanity are the ethical orders of human principles.

Contemplating the patterns of humanity to instruct and transform all under heaven so that the world completes its rites and customs is the sage's way of employing Bi.

The image of Bi is taken from fire beneath the mountain, and also from the hexagram change: yielding coming to adorn the firm, and firm going up to adorn the yielding.

In general, some hexagrams are formed by the meaning and images of their two trigrams: such as Difficulty at the Beginning (Zhūn) taking movement within danger and clouds and thunder, or Conflict taking firmness above and danger below with heaven and water moving contrarily.

Some take a single line as the source of the hexagram's formation: such as "the yielding attains position and upper and lower respond to it" in Small Taming, or "the yielding attains the honored position, great and central, and upper and lower respond to it" in Possession in Great Measure (Dà Yǒu).

Some take the two trigrams and also the meaning of waxing and waning: such as thunder in the earth for Return, or the mountain resting on the earth for Splitting Apart (Bō).

Some combine the two images with the interchange of two lines: such as Increase (Yì) taking decreasing the upper and increasing the lower, or Decrease taking decreasing the lower and increasing the upper.

Some form the hexagram by two images and then also adopt the meaning of the lines: such as the firm cutting through the yielding in Breakthrough (Resoluteness) (Guài), or the yielding meeting the firm in Coming to Meet (Gòu).

Some form the hexagram by function: such as entering water and bringing it up for The Well (Jǐng), or wood with fire above it for The Cauldron (Dǐng); The Cauldron also takes the shape of the hexagram as an image.

Some take physical shape as an image: such as thunder beneath the mountain for Nourishment, or "something in the mouth" for Biting Through (Shì Hé). These are the principles of hexagram formation.

Expressions like "firm above, yielding below" or "decreasing the upper and increasing the lower" mean firm residing above and yielding below, or decreasing above and increasing below, stated with respect to the formed hexagram, not meaning an ascending and descending within the hexagram itself.

As in Conflict and Innocence (The Unexpected) (Wú Wàng) saying "the firm comes," how could it come from the upper trigram?

Whenever a yielding line resides in the fifth position, it is said that "the yielding advances and moves upward"; yielding belongs below, yet it resides in the honored position, which is advancing upward—not meaning that it ascended from the lower trigram.

The transformations of hexagrams all originate from The Creative (Heaven) and The Receptive (Earth). Earlier scholars did not comprehend this and therefore claimed that Bi originally came from Peace (Tài).

How could The Creative (Heaven) and The Receptive (Earth) combine into Peace, and then Peace transform into something else?

The lower trigram Li was originally The Creative (Heaven), whose middle line transformed to become Li; the upper trigram Gen was originally The Receptive (Earth), whose top line transformed to become Gen.

Because Li is inside, it says "yielding comes"; because Gen is on top, it says "firm goes up"—not that it came up from the lower trigram.

The Creative (Heaven) and The Receptive (Earth) transform into the six children, and the Ba Gua double into the sixty-four, all originating from the transformations of The Creative (Heaven) and The Receptive (Earth).

Yichuan YizhuanGreat Image

A mountain is where plants, trees, and myriad things gather and grow. Fire is below it and illuminates upward, so that all kinds are bathed in its light, which is the image of adornment.

The noble person observes the image of fire beneath the mountain illuminating brightly, in order to cultivate and clarify his ordinary governance and achieve a government of civil brilliance, without being rashly decisive in judging lawsuits.

Judging lawsuits is something about which a ruler must be most cautious; how could he rely on his own brightness and carelessly act on his own judgment? This is the intent of the sage, serving as a profound warning.

The image is taken purely from fire beneath the mountain illuminating myriad things to serve as a warning in employing brightness; and Bi inherently possesses the meaning of not daring to judge lawsuits rashly.

Deciding lawsuits relies solely on actual facts; if there is cosmetic adornment, the true facts will be obscured. Therefore, one does not dare employ adornment to judge lawsuits.

Zhouyi ZhuTuan commentary

If firm and yielding are not divided, how could pattern arise? Therefore Six at the top of The Receptive (Earth) comes to reside in the second position, which is the meaning of "yielding comes to adorn the firm."

The yielding comes to adorn the firm, dwelling in position and attaining the center; hence "success." Nine in the second place of The Creative (Heaven) is distributed to occupy the upper position, which is the meaning of distributing the firm upward to adorn the yielding.

The firm going up to adorn the yielding does not attain Central Position, which is not as good as the yielding coming to adorn the firm; hence "slightly advantageous to have somewhere to go." Firm and yielding intercross to form pattern: this is the pattern of heaven.

Halting things not by military might but by civil brilliance: this is the pattern of humanity. Observing the patterns of heaven, the changes of the seasons can be known; observing the patterns of humanity, transformation and completion can be achieved.

Zhouyi ZhuGreat Image

Dwelling in the time of Bi, one checks things through civil brilliance, not through severe punishments; therefore "the noble person clarifies ordinary governance" and "does not dare to judge lawsuits rashly."

Zhouyi ZhengyiJudgment

Correct Meaning: "Bi" means adornment. The two images of firm and yielding mutually pattern and adorn each other. "Bi brings success": because the yielding comes to adorn the firm and attains success, it is said "Bi brings success."

"Slightly advantageous to have somewhere to go": because the firm goes up to adorn the yielding and does not attain central correctness, it cannot undertake a great going; hence "slightly advantageous to have somewhere to go."

Zhouyi ZhengyiTuan commentary

From "The Tuan says" to "Somewhere to go." Correct Meaning: Regarding "Bi brings success: the yielding comes and adorns the firm, hence success": this explains the meaning of "Bi brings success."

It does not simply say "Bi," but links it as "Bi brings success" because through Bi success is brought about; the matter and meaning are connected, just as in "Great is the Qian primal!" where "primal" is linked with "Qian."

"The yielding comes and adorns the firm, hence success": the yielding coming to adorn the firm, mutually decorating each other with pattern, is the meaning of Bi. Mutually adorning brings success; hence it says "Bi brings success."

The reason it does not repeat the character "Bi" below "success" to conclude it is that "success" is explained in direct connection with "Bi," so "Bi" need not be concluded again under "success."

"Distributing the firm upward to adorn the yielding, hence it is slightly advantageous to have somewhere to go" explains the meaning of "slightly advantageous to have somewhere to go."

The body of The Creative (Heaven) is below; now, distributing Nine in the second place of The Creative (Heaven) to go upward and adorn Six at the top of The Receptive (Earth) is "distributing the firm upward to adorn the yielding."

Leaving the center of Nine in the second place to go and dwell in a position without rank, leaving the good to follow what is inferior, going brings no great advantage; hence "slightly advantageous to have somewhere to go."

Regarding the commentary from "If firm and yielding are not divided" to "slightly advantageous to have somewhere to go": Correct Meaning: Why does Six at the top of The Receptive (Earth) come to dwell in the second position rather than the first or third, and why is Nine in the second place of The Creative (Heaven) distributed to dwell in the top position rather than the fifth?

Because the nature of The Creative (Heaven) is firm and proud, its Nine in the second place dwells at the extremity of The Receptive (Earth); the nature of The Receptive (Earth) is yielding and compliant, not seeking to be first among things, so its Six at the top comes down to dwell in the second place of The Creative (Heaven).

Moreover, if the yielding did not dwell in the second place of The Creative (Heaven) and the firm did not dwell at the extremity of The Receptive (Earth), one would not obtain "civil brilliance and stillness."

Furthermore, yang originally belongs above and yin below; one ought to distribute firm downward and yielding upward. Why then distribute firm upward and yielding downward? It is said here because it originally comes from Peace (Tài).

When Heaven and Earth interact in Peace, firm and yielding can intercross.

If The Creative (Heaven) were above and The Receptive (Earth) below, Heaven and Earth would be obstructed in Standstill (Stagnation) (Pǐ), and firm and yielding could not intercross; hence firm is distributed upward and yielding downward.

Correct Meaning: The substance of Heaven comprises the two images of firm and yielding; firm and yielding intercrossing to form pattern is the pattern of heaven. Correct Meaning: Civil brilliance is Li; stillness is Gen.

Employing this dao of civil brilliance to regulate and restrain people is the human teaching of civil virtue; this is the image of the Bi hexagram.

Having both the pattern of heaven and the pattern of humanity, and wishing to extol and expand the meaning of the pattern of heaven and the pattern of humanity, the sage uses them to govern things.

Correct Meaning: Regarding "Contemplating the patterns of heaven to observe the changes of the seasons": this means the sage should observe the patterns of heaven, where firm and yielding intercross and adorn each other into patterns, so as to observe the changes of the four seasons.

For instance, in the fourth month when pure yang is in power, yin is within it, and delicate grasses die; in the tenth month when pure yin is in power, yang is within it, and winter wheat sprouts. This is observing firm and yielding to discern seasonal changes.

"Contemplating the patterns of humanity to transform and complete all under heaven": this means the sage observes the patterns of humanity—referring to the Odes, Documents, Rites, and Music—and should model himself on these teachings to "transform and complete all under heaven."

Zhouyi ZhengyiGreat Image

Correct Meaning: Regarding "Fire beneath the mountain: Bi": this is intended to show fire illuminating the mountain from below, possessing brightness and adornment.

It also takes the mountain containing the fire's brightness as an image of the noble person harboring civil brilliance within to manage ordinary governance; hence it says "fire beneath the mountain: Bi."

"Clarifies ordinary governance": using this cultural brilliance and discernment to govern ordinary affairs. "Does not dare to judge lawsuits rashly": he must not simply use bold decisiveness to settle lawsuits.
