I Ching casting

Positioned at the base of Qian and corresponding with the governing yin line above, this line transforms into Hexagram 57, highlighting flexible discernment over rigid insistence.

Traditional commentary notes that returning to one's own course carries inherent good fortune because the individual senses subtle resistance before incurring any real harm. Rather than forcing progress against prevailing headwinds, self-directed retreat preserves vital strength.

Return to your established routine whenever a new venture meets premature resistance.

Career

In professional endeavors, this line suggests testing new waters but having the sound judgment to step back if organizational conditions are not yet receptive. Traditional readings praise the discipline of returning to one's primary responsibilities before mistakes multiply.

Such a tactical pause is not a retreat of weakness, but an intelligent preservation of professional credibility and resources. Recommit to your core competencies instead of overextending into untested initiatives.

Love & relationships

In romantic partnerships, Nine at the Beginning indicates that when emotional interaction feels rushed or out of sync, stepping back to center oneself restores natural balance.

The classical line statement notes that returning to one's authentic baseline brings auspicious clarity and avoids unnecessary misunderstandings. Holding healthy boundaries allows both partners room to breathe and rediscover genuine appreciation.

Ground yourself in personal calm to help the relationship regain its healthy rhythm.

Wealth

Regarding material affairs, this position highlights the prudence of withdrawing from unproven financial ventures or speculative commitments at the first sign of friction.

Classical analysis values the instinct to protect principal by returning to verified, conservative arrangements before exposure widens. Keeping capital within familiar and transparent channels prevents unneeded stress.

Step back from speculative proposals and maintain your existing financial safeguards.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

復 (return) is pronounced fāng-liù, the same in both lines.

The lower trigram Qian is inherently an entity meant to be above; its aspiration is to advance upward, yet it is restrained by yin. However, Nine at the Beginning embodies Qian, dwells below, and attains correctness.

It is situated far from the yin line above; though it has a proper correspondence with the Fourth line, it can maintain itself through correctness and refuses to be tamed. Hence it bears the image of 'returning from one's own way.'

If a diviner acts like this, there is no blame, and there will be good fortune.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Nine at the Beginning is a yang line in the Qian trigram. Yang belongs above, and possessing the talent of firmness and strength, it is fully capable of advancing upward to return and share the same aspiration with those above.

Its advance and return to the top is its proper path; hence it says 'returning from one's own way.' Since it returns from its own way, what blame could there be? There is no blame, and furthermore there is good fortune.

In the various lines, when 'no blame' is stated, it means that if one acts in such a manner, there will be no blame; hence it is said that 'no blame' means being good at making up for faults.

Even if the line's meaning is inherently good, it does not contradict the principle that failing to act thus would bring blame.

Nine at the Beginning acts by following its proper path, without any fault or blame; hence it says 'how could there be blame?'—making the absence of blame abundantly clear.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Possessing the talent of yang firmness, it returns by following its proper path; its meaning indicates good fortune. The Beginning and the Fourth are in proper correspondence, yet during a time of restraint, they hold each other in check.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling at the beginning of Qian to ascend toward the beginning of Xun, the Fourth line is its proper partner and does not reject it. Ascending as yang toward yin, returning from its own path, following along without opposition, what blame could it incur?

It attains the good fortune of righteousness.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The correct meaning states: Dwelling at the beginning of Qian to ascend toward Xun, the Fourth line is its proper partner; ascending as yang toward yin, it returns to the top by following its own path. The Fourth is compliant and does not resist; it incurs no blame upon itself.

Hence it says 'returning from one's own way, how could there be blame? Good fortune.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

The correct meaning states: 'Its meaning indicates good fortune': ascending as yang toward yin and responding with firmness to the yielding, its principle and meaning bring good fortune.
