I Ching casting

As a yin line at the base of Kan Water, line 1 lacks central placement yet maintains correspondence with Yang nine at line 4, signaling dispute at its earliest inception.

The line text advises against perpetuating the conflict, transforming toward Hexagram 10, while the Small Image underscores that contention must never be prolonged.

Though some loose talk or criticism arises, speaking clearly and dropping the matter promptly secures eventual good fortune. Clearing the air quickly and walking away prevents petty talk from turning into a major crisis.

Career

Early signs of workplace friction or administrative misunderstandings should be handled with factual clarity rather than defensive posturing. State your position cleanly, rectify the record, and immediately refocus on practical duties.

Allowing an argument to drag on only drains organizational capital and inflames partisan office politics. Address minor miscommunications on the spot and move on to keep your professional momentum clean.

Love & relationships

Minor domestic disagreements or stray criticisms can create momentary friction, but amplifying them invites deeper discord. The traditional commentaries note that even if spoken grievances appear, clarifying intentions with patience dissolves underlying mistrust.

Refusing to revive historical grievances prevents an isolated incident from spoiling mutual affection. Clarify simple misunderstandings gently and let the issue rest to protect the relationship.

Wealth

Small commercial disputes, shipping mishaps, or minor billing discrepancies are best resolved promptly with cooperative settlements. Pursuing aggressive legal remedy over trivial sums consumes time and goodwill that far outweigh any monetary compensation.

The omen favors taking a modest compromise to close the book swiftly and preserve operational bandwidth. Settle minor financial discrepancies quickly so they do not drain your ongoing focus and capital.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Yin and yielding, dwelling at the bottom, cannot pursue conflict to the end; hence its image and omen are such.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Six at the Beginning, being soft and weak, occupies the lowest position and cannot carry conflict through to the end.

Therefore, at the beginning of conflict, a warning is given based on the capacity of Six: if one does not perpetuate the affair, then although there may be small talk, in the end one will attain good fortune.

Conflict is not something that should be prolonged; with the talent of yin and yielding contending from below, it is difficult to find good fortune.

Because there is support and response above, and one is able not to perpetuate the affair, though there are slight words, good fortune is ultimately attained. 'Small talk' refers to a minor mishap. Not perpetuating the affair and avoiding disaster is the good fortune of conflict.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Six, being soft and weak, contends from below; by principle it must not perpetuate the matter. Prolonging the conflict would lead to defeat and bring disaster. Moreover, at the start of conflict, one is immediately warned that conflict must not be prolonged.

Dwelling at the bottom with soft weakness, one lacks the talent to contend; though one does not prolong the affair, having entered into conflict there will inevitably be slight misfortune, hence 'small talk.'

Having ceased to prolong the affair, and having a proper, firm yang correspondence above who clarifies the truth, one ultimately attains good fortune. Otherwise, how could one escape?

In the sense of conflict, those in the same line-position who correspond are allies; thus the first line finds its defense clarified by the fourth. Those in the same line-position who do not get along are adversaries; thus the second and fifth are enemies.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling at the beginning of conflict, conflict cannot be brought to an end; hence 'do not perpetuate the affair,' after which good fortune follows. In general, yang leads and yin follows; yin does not initiate.

When the fourth calls, the first responds; only when provoked does it enter into conflict. Dwelling at the beginning of conflict, it does not initiate conflict; although it cannot avoid contending, in settling the conflict its case is clearly vindicated.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

From 'Six at the Beginning' to 'there is small talk; in the end, good fortune.' The correct meaning: 'Do not perpetuate the affair'—'perpetuate' means prolong. One must not prolong contentious litigation, because 'conflict cannot be brought to an end.'

'There is small talk; in the end, good fortune' means that Six at the Beginning corresponds to Nine in the Fourth Place.

Yet Nine in the Fourth Place is firm and yang, unjustly encroaching on oneself first; Six at the Beginning is yin and yielding, entering litigation only upon being provoked. Though unable to avoid contending, it does so out of necessity, hence 'small talk.'

Because it dwells at the start of conflict and does not initiate it, 'in the end, good fortune.' Commentary: From 'Dwelling at the beginning of conflict' to 'its case is clearly vindicated.'

The correct meaning: 'Dwelling at the beginning of conflict' means having just entered the realm of conflict, where the dispute is still minor.

'Does not initiate conflict' means that being yin and yielding, it waits for the other to call before responding, hence it does not initiate.

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

The correct meaning: 'Conflict cannot be prolonged' explains 'do not perpetuate the affair.' Because conflict cannot be prolonged, one does not prolong this contentious matter. 'Its defense is clarified' explains 'there is small talk.'

Because conflict must be analyzed and made clear, though the fourth encroached at first, the first line is able to argue its case with clear reason; hence there is only 'small talk' at the start.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six at the Beginning, initial line, upper-medium: A migrating swan cries clearly, flying alone apart from the flock; soaring high on its wings, it brushes past the tilted clouds.

Setting its course due north, it can advance toward its goal; a fine reputation will be heard far and wide.
