I Ching casting

Classical commentary observes that sitting at the bottom of gentle wind produces vacillation between advancing and retreating, reflecting an unsettled will.

The metaphor of the warrior's perseverance indicates that internal discipline and single-minded focus are needed to master doubt. Committing decisively to one course of action dispels uncertainty and restores momentum.

Career

At work, excessive analysis or trying to accommodate every contradictory opinion can lead to paralysis and missed timing. Treating your project plan like a disciplined operational mandate eliminates unnecessary second-guessing.

Setting strict deadlines and executing them with quiet determination keeps your professional reputation strong.

Love & relationships

Hesitant or ambiguous communication in romance can leave a partner feeling bewildered or emotionally insecure. Doubts often linger when actions appear noncommittal, making transparent declarations of intent essential.

Speaking your mind with gentle clarity cuts through hesitation and brings mutual reassurance.

Wealth

Wavering between conflicting financial tips or second-guessing sound strategies invites unnecessary friction and loss. Traditional interpretations recommend establishing ironclad budgeting rules and sticking to predetermined risk limits.

Adhering strictly to your savings plan protects your assets from impulsive or erratic moves.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

The initial line, being yin residing below, is the ruler of Xun; with an excess of humble compliance, it carries the image of advancing and retreating indecisively.

If one approaches it with the steadfastness of a warrior, one can remedy what falls short and attain what is appropriate.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Six with yin and yielding resides in humble gentleness without centrality, occupying the lowest place and supporting the firm; it is excessively humble and gentle.

When a yin and yielding person is excessively humble and gentle, his will is fearful and insecure, now advancing, now retreating, not knowing what to follow.

What is beneficial to him is the perseverance of a warrior; if he can employ the firm and steadfast will of a warrior, it will be appropriate. Striving to be firm and steadfast, he will avoid the errors of excessive humility and fearful anxiety.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Advancing and retreating without knowing where to rest means his mind is filled with doubt and fear. It is beneficial to use the firm perseverance of a warrior to establish his will; then his will will be regulated. 'Regulated' means cultivated and established.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling at the beginning of an order, he is not yet able to submit to the order; hence he advances and retreats. To establish orders and align the crooked, nothing is better than a warrior; hence 'beneficial is the warrior's perseverance' to regulate them.

Zhouyi ZhuSmall Image

A mind of gentle compliance advances and retreats in doubt and fear.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Correct Meaning states: Six at the Beginning dwells at the inception of orders, when the laws have not yet been proclaimed; embodying yielding gentleness, he cannot make his own decisions, his mind harbors advance and retreat, and he is not yet able to follow commands.

To establish orders and align the crooked, nothing is better than awe and martial strength; since he cannot yet follow orders, it is fitting to use the correctness of a warrior to regulate and order him; hence it says, 'Advancing and retreating; beneficial is the warrior's perseverance.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

The Correct Meaning states: 'The will is in doubt': wishing to follow, he does not yet understand the order; wishing not to follow, he fears punishment falling upon himself; harboring doubt in his mind is why he advances and retreats.

The Correct Meaning states: 'The will is regulated': martial force is not normally what should be used to carry out orders, yet saying 'beneficial is the warrior' means the intention is to cause people to be brought under orderly governance; hence it says, 'beneficial is the warrior.'

This is like the Xiang commentary on Six at the Beginning of Hexagram Meng: 'Beneficial to use punishment on men, in order to make the laws correct.'
