I Ching casting

Six at Third is yin situated atop the lower trigram of joy, lacking both central balance and proper correspondence with the upper sphere.

The Xiang commentary directly describes this posture as improper, warning that demanding primary honors through sheer pretension results in being demoted.

The shift toward Hexagram 34 (Da Zhuang) emphasizes that manufactured bravado collapses quickly unless checked by immediate modesty.

Career

Attempting to bypass meritocratic channels or leverage personal favors to secure an unearned promotion invites swift institutional pushback.

When technical capability fails to match self-promoted expectations, public embarrassment and loss of authority are the inevitable outcomes. Focusing on developing substantive competence will save you from painful setbacks caused by premature ambition.

Love & relationships

Approaching romance with superficial posturing or expecting special privileges without genuine emotional investment will alienate prospective partners. Demanding grand gestures while offering little sincerity turns mutual attraction into quiet disappointment.

Cultivating authentic humility and realistic self-awareness is the only way to establish meaningful partnership.

Wealth

Chasing quick profits through speculative fads or social status displays places severe pressure on your liquidity. Falling for inflated promises usually results in sudden losses that force an awkward retreat to basic solvency.

Grounding your financial habits in rigorous practicality will protect you from the costly hazards of vanity.

‘The younger sister who was to be married off is in a mean position:’—this is shown by the improprieties (indicated in the line).

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Six in the Third Place is Yin-yielding, neither central nor upright, and moreover is the master of pleasing; she is an improper woman whom no one will take. Hence it bears the image of not finding a proper destination and returning instead to become an attendant.

Some say: 'Xu' means a humble servant maiden.

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

Nine in the Fourth Place, with Yang dwelling in the upper trigram without a proper correlate, represents a worthy woman who does not easily follow others, but delays her time waiting for a proper match to whom she may marry. It is precisely the opposite of Six in the Third Place.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Line Three dwells at the top of the lower trigram, not originally of humble status; but because she has lost virtue and lacks a proper correlate, she wishes to marry but cannot find a union. 'Xu' means waiting; one who waits has nowhere to go yet.

Six dwelling in Line Three is not in Correct Position, showing unrighteous virtue; yielding yet esteeming firmness, her conduct is not compliant; being the ruler of pleasing and seeking marriage through seductive pleasure, her movement violates ritual; above she has no correlate and no one to receive her.

Having nowhere to go, she must wait. When a woman behaves like this, who would take her? She cannot be a man's wife. She ought to return and seek to become a concubine-attendant, which would then be acceptable. Through impropriety she loses her proper place.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

'Not appropriate' means her position, her virtue, and her way of seeking marriage are all inappropriate; hence no one takes her, which is why she must wait.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

The mistress of the house still remains, yet she seeks to advance. Her advance has not met the proper time, hence there is waiting. Because she cannot advance, she 'returns home' to await the time, and only 'as a concubine-attendant' does she go.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Rectified Meaning: 'The marrying maiden as an attendant'—Six in the Third Place, at the time of The Marrying Maiden, dwells at the top of the lower trigram, bearing the image of wishing to become the mistress of the house; yet dwelling not in Correct Position, the mistress of the house still remains.

Since the mistress of the house remains, seeking to advance means she has not yet met her time. Not meeting her time, she ought to wait; hence it says, 'The marrying maiden as an attendant.'

'Returns home to become a concubine-attendant'—having to wait and unable to advance, she should return home to await the proper time, and only go as a concubine-attendant; hence it says, 'Returns home to become a concubine-attendant.'

Rectified Meaning: 'Not appropriate' means she has not met her proper time, and thus ought to wait.
