‘He is firmly correct, and will therefore enjoy good fortune. He ascends the stairs (with all due ceremony):’—he grandly succeeds in his aim.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Being yin residing in a yang position, it corresponds to pushing upward to occupy the exalted seat. If one is truly able to remain correct and steadfast, one may attain good fortune and ascend the stairs. The stairs represent the ease of ascending.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Because the fifth has below it a resonance with the firm and central, it can occupy the exalted seat and obtain good fortune. Yet its substance is originally yin and soft; only by holding fast to correctness and steadfastness can it attain its good fortune.

If it cannot be correct and steadfast, its trust in the worthy will not be wholehearted and its appointment of the worthy will not endure to the end—how then could it achieve good fortune? A flight of steps is that by which one ascends.

Entrusting the worthy who are firm and central to assist one's ascent is like climbing upward by the steps: it means having a proper path and thus making it easy.

This refers to the proper resonance with Nine in the Second Place; yet all worthy individuals below serve as steps for pushing upward. If one can employ the worthy, they will push upward together in cohorts.

Relying on and entrusting worthy talents while remaining steadfast and correct—pushing upward in this manner can bring about great governance across all under Heaven, and one's aspirations can be greatly realized.

In the ruler's way of pushing upward, the only concern is the lack of assistance from worthy talents; once assistance is present, it is like ascending by the stairs.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Ascending to attain the exalted position, soft in substance yet finding resonance, receiving others without rebuffing them, delegating without monopolizing—hence it attains 'perseverance brings good fortune; one ascends the stairs' and becomes revered.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Sub-commentary states: As for 'perseverance brings good fortune; one ascends the stairs,' Six in the Fifth Place occupies the exalted position with softness, welcomes Nine in the Second Place, and does not monopolize authority; hence it attains 'perseverance brings good fortune; one ascends the stairs.'

Preserving this nobility and ascending the throne, it is therefore said: 'perseverance brings good fortune; one ascends the stairs.'

The Sub-commentary states: As for 'one's aspiration is greatly attained,' residing in the center it obtains 'perseverance brings good fortune,' and dwelling in nobility it preserves 'ascending the stairs.'

Its aspiration is greatly realized; hence it is said: 'one's aspiration is greatly attained.'

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six in the Fifth Place, fifth line, supreme auspiciousness: Good tidings arrive, bringing smiles to the face. Soaring aloft in one flight, parting the clouds to reach Heaven.
