I Ching casting

Holding the central position of the upper trigram, this yin line answers the firm yang of line two, embodying loyalty to established standards and harmonious partnership.

Classical commentary notes that yielding consistency brings auspicious stability when fulfilling supportive duties, but caution arises if an executive authority leans entirely on passive custom.

In plain terms, adhering to proven processes and cooperating with others works well right now, provided you do not abandon necessary decision-making.

Career

In workplace environments, this line favors managers and coordinators who preserve continuity and guide teams through established protocols.

While executing existing operational plans creates steady alignment, high-level leaders risk inertia if they rely strictly on tradition during times calling for decisive innovation.

In plain terms, maintaining reliable routines will protect current operations, but senior leaders must still retain the courage to adapt when circumstances demand it.

Love & relationships

In romantic relationships, this line represents deep commitment, fidelity, and an appreciation for shared daily routines.

The structural correspondence between lines two and five highlights mutual respect, though an overemphasis on passive compromise can sometimes stifle open dialogue.

In plain terms, loyalty and emotional devotion strengthen your bond, but a healthy partnership also requires both voices to be heard equally.

Wealth

Fiscal management benefits from sticking to established budgeting methods and avoiding speculative detours that disrupt core stability. The transition toward Hexagram 28 suggests avoiding excessive systemic strain by leaning on tried-and-true financial frameworks.

In plain terms, following a disciplined, time-tested financial plan is your safest course against unexpected outside pressures.

Line statement

5. The fifth line, divided, shows its subject continuously maintaining the virtue indicated by it. In a wife this will be fortunate; in a husband, evil.

Small Image

‘Such firm correctness in a wife will be fortunate:’—it is hers to the end of life to follow with an unchanged mind. The husband must decide what is right, and lay down the rule accordingly:—for him to follow (like) a wife is evil.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Responding to firm centrality with yielding centrality, enduring and unchanging, it is correct and steadfast; yet this is the way of a woman, not appropriate for a husband. Hence the image and divination are such.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The fifth line responds to the second; responding to firm yang with yielding yin, dwelling in the center while its partner is also central, this is the correctness of yielding yin; hence enduring long in its virtue constitutes steadfastness.

Taking compliance as constancy is the way of a woman; in a woman it is steadfastness, and therefore brings good fortune. But if a man takes complying with others as constancy, he loses the correctness of firm yang, which brings misfortune.

The fifth line is the ruler's position, yet it does not speak of the ruler's way: if the meaning of Six in the Fifth Place brings misfortune even to a grand master, how much more so for the way of a ruler!

In other hexagrams, a six occupying the ruler's position and responding to the firm is not necessarily a defect; but in Duration it is inadmissible. How could the ruler's way ever take yielding compliance as constancy?

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The fifth line following the second is correct and brings good fortune for a woman. A woman takes following as correctness and compliance as virtue, and must remain steadfast in following one to the end.

A husband governs through righteousness; following the way of a woman brings misfortune.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Occupying the honored position and acting as the lord of Duration, it cannot govern through righteousness, but instead ties its resonance to the second line, keeping its mind singularly steadfast and merely following another's lead.

This is good fortune for a woman, but misfortune for a husband.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Correct meaning: 'Enduring in one's virtue is steadfast' means that Six in the Fifth Place ties its resonance to the second line and cannot extend to others; it constantly maintains its virtue undivided and steadfast, hence 'enduring in one's virtue is steadfast.'

'Good fortune for a woman' means its mind is dedicated and steadfast, merely following another's lead, which is good fortune for a woman.

'Misfortune for a husband' means a husband must judge and decide affairs properly and cannot merely remain undivided and follow another's lead, hence 'misfortune for a husband.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Correct meaning: 'Following one to the end' means keeping the mind steadfast and undivided, following that devotion to the end of one's days.

'Following the woman brings misfortune': the fifth and second correspond; the fifth occupies the honored position and belongs to Zhen as husband, while the second is in the lower trigram and belongs to Xun as wife.

The fifth line is bound to the second, hence 'following the woman brings misfortune.'

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six in the Fifth Place, the fifth line, lowest-low: Lake waters ripple endlessly, a lone boat atop the swells. The traveler is yet unknown, a waning moon over the mountain tower.
