I Ching casting

Positioned at the restless peak of the lower trigram, this yin line rejects genuine nourishment in favor of unchecked indulgence, receiving the stark verdict of misfortune and prolonged inaction.

Classical tradition uses the ten-year span to underscore the enduring cost of violating moral and operational principles. This is a time to halt active initiatives entirely and rebuild your fundamental values from scratch.

Career

Rushing after immediate rewards while disregarding professional ethics or industry standards inevitably alienates trusted collaborators and destroys credibility.

The Small Image characterizes this path as profoundly contrary to right conduct, signaling that reckless shortcuts close off valuable opportunities for an extended period.

Withdrawing from high-stakes maneuvers to correct your underlying approach is necessary to repair your standing.

Love & relationships

Fixating on superficial gratification, emotional manipulation, or materialistic demands corrodes the foundations of an authentic partnership. When superficial cravings supersede mutual respect, the resulting breach of trust leaves lasting relational wounds.

Refocusing on honesty and sincere emotional connection is essential before meaningful intimacy can return.

Wealth

Excessive consumerism and high-risk speculative gambles drain your financial reserves and destabilize long-term solvency. Deviating from disciplined financial habits in search of immediate windfalls will lead to compounding losses and difficult recoveries.

Severing risky financial ties and returning to strict conservation is the only way to safeguard your balance sheet.

Line statement

3. The third line, divided, shows one acting contrary to the method of nourishing. However firm he may be, there will be evil. For ten years let him not take any action, (for) it will not be in any way advantageous.

Small Image

‘For ten years let him not take any action:’—his course is greatly opposed (to what is right).

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Being yin, yielding, neither central nor correct, and dwelling at the culmination of movement, it contravenes nourishment. Having contravened nourishment, even if it tries to be upright it meets misfortune; hence its image and divination are such.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The way of Yi brings good fortune only through rectitude. Six in the Third Place has a yin, yielding nature and occupies a position neither central nor correct; moreover, it is at the extreme of movement, which means moving in a yielding, perverse, and unrighteous manner.

Nourishing in this way contravenes the correct path of Yi, which is why it brings misfortune.

Attaining the rectitude of Yi ensures that all nourishment is auspicious: whether seeking nourishment or nourishing others, it accords with righteousness; nourishing oneself completes one's virtue.

The Third line, however, contravenes the correct path, so it is cautioned with 'do not use for ten years.' Ten is the end of numbers, meaning it can never be employed and that nowhere is it advantageous to go.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The reason it is cautioned that it can never be used is that the path it pursues is in gross violation of righteous principles.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Treading in unrighteousness to nourish what is above, it caters to those above through flattery. Contravening the principle of nourishing what is correct, it is therefore said, 'Contravening nourishment; perseverance brings misfortune.'

Acting in this manner during the time of Yi, it will be discarded for ten years. Conducting oneself thus, there is nowhere it can be applied with advantage.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Correct Meaning says: As for 'contravening nourishment; perseverance brings misfortune,' 'fu' means contravening. Treading in unrighteousness to nourish Top Nine, it ingratiates itself with the one above through flattery.

Contravening the principle of nourishing what is correct, it is therefore called contravening nourishment where perseverance brings misfortune. Conducting oneself in this way, even after ten years one is still discarded and not employed; hence it says 'do not use for ten years.'

Basing one's conduct on this, there is nothing that is advantageous.

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

The Correct Meaning says: This explains the meaning of 'do not use for ten years.' Because it nourishes those above through flattery, it grossly perverts the correct path; this explains why it is discarded and 'not used for ten years.'

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six in the Third Place, Line 3, Supreme Lower: Affairs should be halted; principles are riddled with errors. The sun is hidden among the clouds; in vain, delays and setbacks mount.
