I Ching casting

Occupying the lowest position as a yin line lacking balance and correctness, Line 1 attempts to capitalize on its correspondence with the powerful fourth line.

Classical commentary warns that shouting out one's pleasure reveals an impoverished resolve, inviting misfortune through unearned vanity. In plain terms, bragging about minor perks or patrons before establishing real competence will quickly backfire.

Career

In workplace environments, associating with influential sponsors or enjoying initial success may tempt you to boast openly before your peers. Such indiscretion breeds resentment among colleagues and signals an unreliable lack of maturity to senior leadership.

In plain terms, keep your mouth shut about your advantages and let quiet competence prove your value instead.

Love & relationships

Romantic interactions may suffer if one partner adopts an arrogant posture or seeks validation by showing off relationship milestones prematurely. Pretentiousness undermines authentic intimacy and breeds quiet friction between partners.

In plain terms, focus on sincere private care rather than flaunting your relationship to the outside world.

Wealth

Financially, an early gain or promising prospect might trigger careless spending or loud claims of prosperity that attract opportunistic demands. Classical interpretations warn that unearned confidence at the beginning of a cycle rapidly evaporates liquid reserves.

In plain terms, lock away early earnings quietly and resist the urge to show off your money.

‘The (subject of the) first six proclaims his pleasure and satisfaction:’—there will be evil; his wishes have been satisfied to overflowing.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Yin, yielding, and a petty person, having strong support above and catching the time when the master manages affairs, cannot bear its enthusiasm and sings its own praises in sound; this is the way to misfortune. Hence the prognosis is such.

The hexagram gets its name primarily from harmony and joy; however, the hexagram judgment carries the meaning of collective joy for the multitude, while the line judgments—except for Nine in the Fourth Place, which agrees with the hexagram—all represent private self-indulgence.

This is why good fortune and misfortune differ.

'Exhausted' means reached the extreme of fullness.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Six at the Beginning, being yin and yielding, resides below; the fourth line is the master of Enthusiasm and responds to it. This is a petty person who is neither central nor correct, dwelling in enthusiasm and favored by the superior.

His will and ambitions are inflated to the extreme; unable to contain his enthusiasm, it bursts forth into sound and voice. Being so frivolous and shallow, it must lead to misfortune. '鸣' (míng) means breaking forth in sound.

Referring to Six at the Beginning, it means that being yin and yielding it resides below, yet its will and ambition reach an extreme; unable to contain its enthusiasm, it breaks forth into sound. It is sure to become arrogant and unrestrained, bringing about misfortune.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling at the beginning of Enthusiasm, it particularly attains its ambition through the superior. When joy is excessive, it turns to licentiousness; when the will is exhausted, misfortune follows. How could enthusiasm be trumpeted in sound?

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Zhengyi commentary states: 'Proclaiming enthusiasm in sound' means that dwelling at the beginning of Enthusiasm, it alone gains resonance with the fourth line; its leisure and enthusiasm are extreme, breaking forth in sound and voice.

But when pleasure reaches its peak, excess leads to dissoluteness. Indulging in joy all alone is why it is 'misfortune.'

The Zhengyi commentary states: Explaining the meaning of 'proclaiming enthusiasm in sound.' At first it proclaims its enthusiasm in sound, but later its joyful ambition is exhausted; hence it is 'misfortune.'
