I Ching casting

As a yang line occupying a yin position adjacent to the supreme ruler, this line transforms toward Hexagram 61, Inner Sincerity. The classical Xiang commentary observes that fearful circumspection allows one's aspirations to be realized without provoking disaster.

Approaching dangerous thresholds with genuine humility and meticulous care ensures safe passage through the storm.

Career

Professional operations place you in direct proximity to decisive leadership or high-exposure projects with negligible tolerance for error. Classical strategy recommends comprehensive documentation, transparent reporting, and deep deference to established protocol.

Operating with respectful vigilance and thoroughness turns an inherently risky assignment into a demonstration of dependability.

Love & relationships

The relationship faces an external crucible where partner expectations or family standards demand serious accountability.

Traditional relationship guidance advises meeting scrutiny with patience, quiet consideration, and consistent demonstration of integrity rather than defensiveness. Showing sincere respect and steady reliability will dissolve suspicion and establish mutual trust.

Wealth

Capital endeavors encounter complex compliance layers or volatile counterparty dynamics where any oversight invites complications. In classical financial philosophy, success here depends on rigorous audit habits and layered risk controls rather than optimistic speed.

Checking every contractual clause with exacting discipline keeps your resources fully protected.

‘He becomes full of apprehensive caution, and in the end there will be good fortune:’—his aim takes effect.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Sù: fanqie reading sh-an + g-e, pronounced sè.

Nine in the Fourth Place is also neither central nor correct, treading upon the firmness of Nine in the Fifth Place; however, being firm and dwelling in a soft place, it can remain vigilant and fearful, thereby attaining ultimate good fortune.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Nine in the Fourth Place is yang and firm, belonging to the body of The Creative; though dwelling in the fourth position, firmness predominates.

Residing in a place of great fear close to the ruler, there is no inherent harmony between them; moreover, line five is excessively firm and resolute. Hence it is "treading on the tiger's tail." "Sùsù" depicts an appearance of continuous dread.

If one can remain fearful and apprehensive, one will attain ultimate good fortune. For although nine is firm, its will is soft; although four is close to the ruler, it does not presume to stay put.

Thus, by being cautiously vigilant and fearful, it ultimately escapes danger and secures good fortune.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Being able to remain fearful and apprehensive, thus ultimately attaining good fortune, means his will is set on moving forward without lingering. By leaving danger behind, he secures good fortune.

Yang firmness can act; dwelling in softness means conducting oneself with compliance.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Pressing close to the supreme honor, supporting yang with yang, he dwells in a place of great fear; hence it says: "Treading on the tiger's tail, fearful and apprehensive."

Yet occupying yin with yang, he takes modesty as his root; though dwelling in peril and dread, he ultimately achieves his aspiration, hence "ultimate good fortune."

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Zhengyi commentary says: "Treading on the tiger's tail, fearful and apprehensive": pressing close to the honored position of line five, this is "treading on the tiger's tail," approaching its peril.

Supporting yang with yang, he dwells in a ground of suspicion and friction; hence "fearful and apprehensive" in danger and dread. "Ultimate good fortune": occupying yin with yang, his intention is capable of modest retreat; hence he ultimately attains good fortune.

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

The Zhengyi commentary says: "His will is carried out" explains "fearful and apprehensive; ultimate good fortune." Though fearful and apprehensive at first, he ultimately attains good fortune because his modest aspiration is carried out; hence "ultimate good fortune."
