I Ching casting

Holding the foundational place as a correct yang line, this position transforms into Hexagram 6 (Song / Conflict), warning that selfish ambition invites disputes.

The minor commentary praises walking one's own path alone, affirming that pure intent and unpretentious steps prevent conflict. In broad terms, embarking on your venture with quiet integrity keeps you free from criticism.

Career

At the beginning of an assignment or new career role, focus on mastering fundamental duties rather than competing for immediate recognition or political favor.

Traditional craftsmanship favors unassuming diligence, proving that durable standing grows from honest, unglamorous execution. To put it plainly, do your basic tasks exceptionally well without pretending to be something you are not.

Love & relationships

Partnerships thrive when you strip away materialistic posturing and present your genuine feelings without contrived courtship tactics. Classical courtship wisdom values sincere, modest affection over grand theatrical gestures that conceal hidden agendas.

In short, being straightforward and honest about who you are creates a lasting, uncomplicated bond.

Wealth

Financial strategy should prioritize balanced cash flow and essential spending while rejecting leveraged speculation or luxury vanity purchases. Traditional fiscal maxims counsel modest frugality, showing that living within simple means eliminates vulnerability to debt.

In plain terms, stick to a realistic budget and avoid chasing flashy schemes to keep your money safe.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Being yang at the bottom, dwelling at the beginning of Treading, he has not yet been swayed by external things; he follows his plain conduct. If the diviner is like this, going forward brings no blame.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Treading does not mean staying put; it carries the meaning of action. The initial line dwells at the very bottom, originally stationed below, yet possessing the talent of yang firmness, he can advance upward.

If he rests content in his humble origin and then goes forward, he will be free of blame.

When a person cannot rest content in the simplicity of poverty and lowliness, his advancement is driven by greedy haste, seeking merely to escape poverty and lowliness, not to accomplish worthy deeds.

Once he attains advancement, arrogance and excess are inevitable; thus going forward brings blame. The worthy person rests content in his simple conduct: in retirement he is joyful, and in advancement he intends to accomplish good.

Therefore, when he attains advancement, he achieves worthy deeds with nothing but excellence—this is keeping to his plain conduct.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

One who rests content in his plain conduct and advances does not seek selfish benefit; he merely carries out his own will and aspiration. "Alone" means single-mindedly.

If the desire for honor and the desire to practice the Dao do battle within his heart, how could he ever rest content in his plain conduct?

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling at the beginning of Treading, this is the inception of conduct. The way of conduct abhors ostentation; therefore, simplicity brings freedom from blame. Conducting oneself with simplicity, where would one go without finding compliance?

One must single-mindedly carry out one's aspiration, and external things will not offend him.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Zhengyi commentary says: Dwelling at the beginning of Treading and using plain simplicity, going forward brings no blame. If one does not use plain simplicity, there will be blame.

The Zhengyi commentary says: "Carrying out his aspiration alone" explains advancing with "plain conduct." While others value ornamentation, he alone remains plain and simple; what blame could there be? Therefore, carrying out his wish alone, nothing will violate him.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Nine at the Beginning, initial line, upper-medium: Neither far nor near, seemingly easy yet seemingly hard. Casually falling into one's hands, smilingly watching from amid the clouds.
