BaZi chart

The elemental dynamic presents robust metal beneath deep water, reflecting an energetic cycle where conservation must precede outward ambition.

Classical Four Pillars analysis suggests that during phases when the Seven Killings or unfavorable elements are strong, prioritizing the Day Master's foundational stamina and the regulating support of the Seal star is far wiser than rushing into premature exertion.

In short, protect your core vitality and trust that the right opening will present itself in time.

Western astrology chart

Challenging outer planetary transits suggest an enforced deceleration where forward progress temporarily meets a cosmic holding pattern.

Astrological wisdom treats such intervals as vital realignment phases, encouraging introspective reflection and structural fortification over frantic activity. Put simply, when external circumstances slow your momentum, use the downtime to strengthen your foundation.

I Ching casting

With the strength of Heaven halted before the perilous water of Kan, the hexagram counsels against plunging recklessly into danger while maintaining confident inner virtue.

The Great Symbolism tradition invokes the image of clouds resting in heaven, advising the noble person to eat, drink, and feast with serene poise while waiting. To put it plainly, do not fight the delay—quietly gather your reserves and the path across the great river will open.

Career

External market ambiguities or shifting regulatory requirements pose unforeseen risks if new projects are rushed into launch.

Classical strategy recommends resting while the competitor exhausts themselves, utilizing this lull to refine workflow protocols and bolster foundational skillsets.

In essence, hold back from aggressive expansion right now and focus on perfecting your preparations behind the scenes.

Wealth

Financial prudence takes center stage as market fluctuations call for defensive capital preservation rather than speculative exposure.

Traditional wealth models value liquid reserves during ambiguous market phases, warning against locking resources into illiquid or high-risk ventures before conditions stabilize. Bottom line, keeping your cash safe and resisting impulsive moves will protect your overall solvency.

Love & relationships

Romantic progression may encounter logistical delays, family responsibilities, or practical hurdles that cannot be solved through hurried pressure.

The classical reading suggests finding joy in quiet shared moments and honest daily support, allowing natural timing to dissolve external friction. In brief, ease off demanding immediate answers and let affection deepen naturally through everyday patience.

Health

Traditional Chinese medicine associations connect Hexagram 5's imagery with digestive vitality and nervous system regulation when facing pent-up stagnation.

Aligning with the hexagram's counsel to feast and rest, restorative wellness focuses on balanced nutrition, adequate sleep, and releasing chronic stress before it strains internal harmony.

All in all, prioritize calm routines and nourishing meals to keep your body resilient against fatigue.

Personal growth

Personal development currently centers on mastering stillness and learning to tolerate ambiguity without anxious reactivity. Resisting the compulsion to force results transforms waiting into an intentional cultivation of character, building endurance for future trials.

Simply put, treat this pause as a masterclass in emotional composure that will serve you for years to come.

Compatibility

Differing personal timelines or distinct priorities can create friction if one party constantly pushes the other for swift conclusions. Cultivating relational flexibility and offering your counterpart room to maneuver builds enduring mutual respect that outlasts temporary stalls.

The takeaway is simple: patience and empathetic listening will bridge the tempo gap between you.

Fortune periods

Your macro lifecycle enters a strategic holding reservoir, where external support slows down to prompt internal self-reliance and disciplined resource management.

Divinatory traditions view the Xu cycle as the quiet prelude to major breakthroughs, rewarding those who cultivate virtue and avoid restless blunders. Overall, staying grounded through this transitional chapter ensures you are fully prepared when destiny accelerates.

Annual reading

This year's ventures may encounter procedural postponements, extended review cycles, or unhurried counterpart responses across formal transactions.

Rather than exhausting your energy through confrontation, maintain standard operations smoothly and expect key outcomes to crystallize in the latter half of the cycle. In short, plan for generous buffers and remain steady through bureaucratic slowdowns.

Name analysis

Nomenclatural assessments aligned with this hexagram favor characters evoking reservoir depth, enduring patience, and generous composure to temper an impetuous temperament.

Names grounded in balanced, harmonious phonic structures provide a psychological anchor that reinforces self-command during trials. Essentially, choosing names resonant with steadfast calm fosters emotional poise in the face of uncertainty.

Date selection

In date selection traditions, the energy of Xu is ill-suited for precipitous lawsuits, sudden gambles, or hasty declarations of conflict, but highly auspicious for celebratory banquets, strategic planning retreats, and team-building gatherings.

Aligning your schedule with harmonious days dedicated to replenishment turns external obstacles into tranquil assets. Put simply, schedule peaceful gatherings and quiet prep work rather than demanding sudden turnarounds.

Feng Shui

Spatial considerations reflect the convergence of water and sky, favoring well-ventilated, uncluttered entryways and living rooms that invite calm Chi without stagnation.

Classical geomantic practice advises using balanced lighting and grounded seating arrangements to foster emotional serenity and accumulate protective domestic energy.

In essence, keeping your living space open, bright, and relaxing will cultivate peaceful vitality throughout the home.

Judgment

Hsü intimates that, with the sincerity which is declared in it, there will be brilliant success. With firmness there will be good fortune; and it will be advantageous to cross the great stream.

Tuan commentary

Hsü denotes waiting. (The figure) shows peril in front; but notwithstanding the firmness and strength (indicated by the inner trigram), its subject does not allow himself to be involved (in the dangerous defile);—it is right he should not be straitened or reduced to extremity.

When it is said that, ‘with the sincerity declared in Hsü, there will be brilliant success, and with firmness there will be good fortune,’ this is shown by the position (of the fifth line) in the place assigned by Heaven, and its being the correct position for it, and in the centre.

‘It will be advantageous to go through the great stream;’—that is, going forward will be followed by meritorious achievement.

Great Image

(The trigram for) clouds ascending over that for the sky forms Hsü. The superior man, in accordance with this, eats and drinks, feasts and enjoys himself (as if there were nothing else to employ him).

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiJudgment

'Xu' means waiting. Qian meets Kan: Qian is vigorous, Kan is dangerous. Meeting danger with firmness without rushing forward to plunge into peril is the meaning of waiting. 'Sincerity' is trust within the center.

In this hexagram, Nine in the Fifth Place, with the Kan trigram's center being solid, possesses yang firmness and central correctness and occupies the place of honor, which is the image of possessing sincerity and attaining correctness.

Kan's water is in front, with Qian's strength approaching it; this is the image of being about to cross water without advancing lightly. Therefore, the divination is that when one has something to wait for and can maintain sincerity, there will be brilliant success.

If one also attains correctness, there will be good fortune and it will be advantageous to cross the great river. Correctness and constancy are advantageous in all things, yet crossing a river especially prizes the ability to wait; then one will not rush recklessly into hazard.

Zhouyi BenyiTuan commentary

This explains the name and meaning of the hexagram through its virtues. This explains the Judgment's text through the hexagram's structure and the two component images.

Zhouyi BenyiGreat Image

The first 'shang' is in the rising tone; 'le' is read like luo. Clouds rise up to heaven and have nothing further to do; they simply wait for the harmony of yin and yang to rain of themselves.

When affairs call for waiting, one is likewise not permitted to take further action, but only to drink, eat, and feast, awaiting their arrival of their own accord. Once there is action, it is no longer waiting.

Yichuan YizhuanJudgment

The Sequence of the Hexagrams says: 'Meng means youthful folly, the youth of things. When things are young, they cannot but be nourished; hence it is received by Waiting. Waiting is the way of food and drink.'

Young and tender things must wait for nourishment to mature; that which is needed to nourish things is food and drink. Therefore it is said: 'Waiting is the way of food and drink.'

Clouds rising up to heaven have the image of steaming moisture; food and drink are that by which things are moistened and nourished, so Waiting is the way of food and drink, which is why it follows Youthful Folly.

The general meaning of the hexagram is the sense of waiting; the Sequence merely takes the greatest of things waited for. The nature of Qian's strength is that it must advance; yet dwelling beneath Kan's peril, the danger obstructs it, so it must wait before advancing.

Waiting means pausing to wait. Speaking from the two trigrams, Qian's firmness and strength advance upward and encounter danger, unable to proceed; hence it has the meaning of waiting.

Speaking from the hexagram's talents, the fifth line occupies the ruler's position as the master of Waiting, possessing the virtues of firmness, strength, centrality, and correctness, with sincere trust filling the center. 'Solid in the center' means there is sincerity.

When there is sincerity, there is brilliant light and free course, attaining perseverance, correctness, and good fortune. Waiting in this manner, what cannot be accomplished? Even in danger, there will be no hardship; hence 'advantageous to cross the great river.'

In all instances of 'perseverance brings good fortune,' some mean already correct and therefore auspicious, while others mean attaining correctness brings good fortune; they must be distinguished.

Yichuan YizhuanTuan commentary

Exhausted. The meaning of 'xu' is waiting. Because danger lies ahead, one must not advance hastily, but must wait before proceeding.

With Qian's firmness and strength, being able to wait without moving lightly avoids plunging into peril; its meaning is not to be brought to exhaustion.

A firm and vigorous person is usually hasty in action; to be able to wait before moving is the utmost excellence in handling affairs. Therefore the Master praised it, saying: 'Its meaning is not to be brought to exhaustion.'

The fifth line, with firm solidity occupying the center, is the image of sincerity, and obtaining what one needs is also the meaning of having sincerity.

With Qian's firmness and utmost sincerity, its virtue is bright and achieves free course, attaining perseverance, correctness, and good fortune. That it is able to be so is because it occupies the heavenly position and attains the correct center.

'Occupying the heavenly position' refers to the fifth line; 'with the correct center' encompasses both the second and fifth lines, hence it says 'correct center.' Having sincerity and correctness, though crossing perilous obstructions, going forward will achieve merit.

This is the supreme excellence in the way of waiting. With Qian's firmness and the ability to wait, what would not be advantageous?

Yichuan YizhuanGreat Image

When clouds steam and ascend to heaven, they must wait for yin and yang to blend harmoniously before forming rain. Clouds having risen to heaven have not yet formed rain; hence they convey the meaning of waiting.

The mutual resonance of yin and yang before rain falls is like the gentleman accumulating talent and virtue before applying them in service.

The noble person observes the image of clouds rising to heaven, waiting to become rain; harboring virtue, they wait peacefully for the right time, eating and drinking to nourish their physical strength, feasting and rejoicing to harmonize their mind and will—what is called dwelling in peace to await the mandate.

Zhouyi ZhuTuan commentary

This refers to the fifth line: occupying the heavenly position, it exercises its centrality and correctness. Using this to await things, the way of waiting is perfected; hence 'brilliant success, perseverance brings good fortune.'

The virtue of Qian gains advancement; wherever it goes, it always succeeds.

Zhouyi ZhuGreat Image

The youthful folly has been dispelled, and magnificent virtue shines with success; eating, drinking, feasting, and rejoicing—is it not here!

Zhouyi ZhengyiJudgment

The Correct Meaning states: This is the commentary on the Judgment of Waiting. 'Xu' means waiting. When things are first young and tender, they await nourishment to mature; without trust, one cannot stand, and what is waited for is only trust.

Hence it says 'Waiting: there is sincerity,' meaning that the substance of Waiting consists solely in trust.

As for 'brilliant success, perseverance brings good fortune,' if one can have trust, the way of waiting becomes bright and things attain free course, being auspicious in correctness; hence it says 'brilliant success, perseverance brings good fortune.'

As for 'advantageous to cross the great river,' advancing with firmness and strength means one does not suffer from danger, and the virtue of Qian achieves success; hence it says 'advantageous to cross the great river.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiTuan commentary

From 'The Tuan Commentary says: Waiting means waiting' down to 'with the correct center.' The Correct Meaning states: This explains the Judgment of Waiting. 'Xu' means waiting.

'Danger is ahead' explains the name of the hexagram: it has the meaning of waiting, hence it says 'Waiting means waiting.' 'Danger is ahead' explains why waiting is required: because perilous difficulty lies ahead, one must wait before advancing.

'Firm and strong without being trapped, its meaning is not to be brought to exhaustion' explains why the way of waiting achieves success: due to Qian's firmness and strength, though encountering danger ahead, it is not trapped or stalled, so its meaning of waiting does not involve exhaustion; thus it attains 'brilliant success, perseverance brings good fortune' through the virtue of Qian.

'Waiting: there is sincerity, brilliant success, perseverance brings good fortune; occupying the heavenly position with the correct center' reiterates the Judgment's text and then explains it.

It says that this substance of Waiting not only attains Qian's firmness and strength to avoid being trapped, but also relies on the power of centrality and correctness.

With Nine in the Fifth Place occupying the Son of Heaven's position, and being yang in a yang place, it is correct and central; thus it can possess trust, be brilliantly successful, and bring good fortune through perseverance.

Being firm and strong without being trapped derives solely from the virtues of the two component images; occupying the heavenly position with the correct center is the virtue of Nine in the Fifth Place.

Generally, in the substance of hexagrams, some draw virtue directly from images, some directly from lines, and some combine both images and lines; this hexagram is an example of the latter.

Regarding the commentary 'Refers to the fifth line' down to 'perseverance brings good fortune,' the Correct Meaning states: 'The way of waiting is perfected' means that the way of waiting first requires trust, and subsequently brings brilliance, free course, and perseverance with good fortune for all things.

To be capable of all these is to bring the way of waiting to completion. The fifth line occupies the heavenly position, being yang in the honored place; being central, it is without bias, and being correct, it is without crookedness.

Using this to await things, all that is undertaken will succeed; hence 'the way of waiting is perfected.' 'Advantageous to cross the great river: going brings merit.'

The Correct Meaning states: This explains the meaning of 'advantageous to cross the great river': because Qian is firm and strong, moving through danger brings achievement.

Regarding the commentary 'The virtue of Qian' down to 'always succeeds,' the Correct Meaning states: Earlier it said 'firm and strong without being trapped,' and here it says 'going brings merit'; firmness and strength are Qian.

Therefore, when the virtue of Qian gains advancement, going and achieving merit means that wherever it goes, it always succeeds.

Although this explains 'advantageous to cross the great river,' it also encompasses the meaning of 'brilliant success' above; it is because of 'brilliant success' that one attains 'advantageous to cross the great river,' hence success is clarified through crossing the great river.

Zhouyi ZhengyiGreat Image

From 'The Image says' down to 'eating, drinking, feasting, and rejoicing.'

The Correct Meaning states: Kan represents both danger and rain; here it mentions neither danger nor rain because this image does not take the meaning of perilous difficulty, hence it does not say 'danger.'

Rain is something that has already fallen, not the meaning of waiting, hence it does not say 'rain.'

It does not say 'there are clouds in heaven,' but says 'clouds rise up to heaven'; if it were 'clouds in heaven,' there would be no way to show the intention to rain, hence it says 'clouds rise up to heaven.'

Saying 'clouds rise up to heaven' means heaven intends to rain, awaiting the time to fall; thus it illustrates that in Waiting, great bounty is about to be bestowed and magnificent virtue will prosper again, so the noble person at this time acts 'by eating, drinking, feasting, and rejoicing.'
